I would say a 12 in. (305 mm) howitzer by looking at the big "knob" on the bottom left on the mounting. This "knob" is much smaller on the 9.2 in. howitzer.

Hi all,

Can anyone identify this coastal gun?
According to photocaption the image was taken in Hong Kong.

Does somebody have any information about the british coastal defences in Hong Kong?

Sturm78,

niehorster.orbat Lists 3 9.2" Coast Defense Batteries at Hong Kong, One 3 gun Mk VII, one 3 gun Mk V, and one 2 gun Mk V.
The Mk V and Mk VII 9.2" were pre WW I naval guns so I believe the Mk numbers actually refer to the Mountings.
The standard heavy coast defense gun in 1939 was the 9.2" BL Gun Mark X on Mounting Barbette Mark V. This mounting gave 15 degrees of elevation for a range of 21,000 yards. There were also Mark VI (30 Degree) and Mark 7 (35 Degree for 36,700 yards). All fired a standard 380lb AP shell at 2,700ft/sec.

Cannot help with the 9.2", but the first 6" looks like a Mk.XXI. Not familiar with the mounting though. Do not know about the second 6". Not enough detail in the photo. Just had another look at it. Possibly a Mk.XII?
