hi, Rob,

no, it´s a "perfect rhyme", really, ... and the battle was in WW I.

hi, Sheldrake,

No, I adhere to the thread title. This man is (was) a Briton.

No, as I said before: a "perfect" rhyme ... hint # 2 .. I`m a navy man ... and he was, too.

Well, I'm stumped. I cannot find any WW1 naval battle which had a prominent UK participant whose name rhymed with the name of the battle. I suppose it may be some obscure UK participant you're thinking of, perhaps someone who was an admiral in WW2, maybe someone called Xxxxland who was at Jutland for example, but none springs to mind.

No, not so obscure, he became quite well known ... try a word search here in the AHF (it´s on the first page).

Thanks pb.

Okay, here's the next one:

In 1941 Canada set up its first codebreaking centre, the Examination Unit. Why did the UK and US initially refuse to have anything to do with it or provide any assistance?

No, nothing like that. Actually the Vichy French were among the first targets, I understand.

Let me refine the question a bit. The US and UK initially refused to have anything to do with it or provide any assistance because of who the Canadians picked to be their first head cryptographer. Who was this person?
