RAAF 453 Squadron Spitfire unearthed in Northern France

Postby Graham Clayton on 14 Nov 2010 10:39

Here is an interesting article from todays edition of the Sydney "Sun-Herald" newspaper about a 453 Squadron Mark IXb Spitfire that was recently discovered in a canal in Normandy, 66 years after it was show down in June 1944.
I have been unable to resize the scans, but you should be able to get an idea from them:

The history of 453 Squadron was sold at the RAAF Museum at Point Cook. Called "Defeat into Victory", it covered the Squadron flying Brewster Buffalos in Malaya and Singapore, then its reformation in Britian flying Spitfires.

The Spitfire found may be heading downunder to the RAAF Museum. The Museum has one Spitfire wreck for restoration already, a second one will just have to be added to the waiting list.
