#1

Post by Aleksei22 » 10 Sep 2004, 18:44

Hello, All

I think that everybody knows famouse W.Churchill's
post war ( pre election 1945 ) speech. He said about
"liberal-gestapo " ...

Pls, look at this photo

Was it some kind of british "liberal-gestapo " ???

Does it means that ALL war-mailings had been perlustrated
during 1939-1945.

Who did it ????

Thank you.

All mail sent by service personnel was subject to review by the various censorship units/bodies, so no 'useful' information could be gained by the enemy if the mail came into there hands.

As far as I know only a small proportion of civilian mail was subject to censor and usually because the authorities had been given some reason to do this.

I presume (and that's all it is) that the War Ministry would invoke some paragraphs of military law to set this up. In regards to civilian mail I presume it would involve the Home Office, the Postmaster General and the Security Agencies.
