German POWs Buried in the US

Who was responsible for placing markers on the graves of German POWs who died and are buried in the US? Is the same organization responsible for maintaining the graves?

The National Cemetery at Finn's Point, NJ contains the remains of 3,000 American soldiers and 13 German POWs. The white marble tombstones on the Germans' graves are identical to those of the American soldiers.

The US Department of Veteran's Affairs maintains the cemetery.

Hi cw:

This does not entirely answer your question but does give a start on researching German POWs in the US.
I was amazed when I googled the subject how many Germans were sent here as opposed to the UK or some closer collection point.

Cheers

Bill

What I am trying to find out is why some markers, like the one in the picture below, have a style of markings on it that differ from the other POW markers.

Markers of those who died before the end of the war "could" be adorned with the swastika as it was the legal symbol of Germany at the time and was no forbidden....of course, most markers that were so marked usually have been defaced or
replaced.....can't be too many left displaying the swastika...

There are some German POW graves near White Sulpher Springs, WV. Some POWs were kept near The Greenbrier resort during the war.

I wonder where one would search for a record of the location of these graves. There were German prisoners held near Danville Illinois, a two hour drive from where I live. Perhaps there are a few in that area?

The German War Graves Commission could probably tell you who to contact, or where to find a specific grave. http://www.volksbund.de/volksbund/volksbund-en.html

If you are just curious about general locations/cemeteries, you might start here: http://www.gentracer.org/buriallist.html I can't vouch for the accuracy of this listing, but the parts I am familiar with are accurate.

There are nearly 100 buried at the Main Post cemetary on Ft. Benning, GA, where my father and mother are interred. There are a number of memorial services held there every year for those soldiers.

The remains of the fifteen German and three Italian POW originally buried in the Camp Atterbury, Indiana cemetery were moved in 1970 to Camp Butler, Illinois. The reason was that better care to the graves could be given there.
