Rodewald POW

Please I need some help... All the info I have regarding my grandfathers pow status is where he was after the war. I have sent emails and letters to all the German government agencies and they have no records of his service, I think because he was Volksdeutscher from the Ukraine. Only the German Red Cross found a telegram he sent out searching for his brother after the war. He stated his pow station as Rodewald, Neustadt am Rübenberge northwest of Hannover. The telegram is dated 1946.
How can I determine how he got there, and which unit he might have been a part of? I think he was a part of the Waffen-SS volksdeutsche cavalry unit in the Ukraine, I was told by my grandma he went to France? And finally Rodewald.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
Cheers. S
