Displaced Persons Camps - Eschheim?

#1

Post by aaaviku » 09 Feb 2015, 15:03

My Estonian parents were in a DP camp (Augsburg Hochfeld) in the late 1940's. From the University of Minnesota archives, I obtained a scan of their cards from the camp card file system. It has some great information, for example, the dates they left the camps for Canada. I knew that they were in Augsburg Hochfeld, however there is another place listed first, "Eschheim". I know that people moved from camp to camp, but I cannot find Eschheim listed as a DP camp, nor can I find it as the name of a place on current maps. Does anyone know what "Eschheim" may refer to? Thank you!

Did a quick search and found this....

Guide to the Displaced Persons Camps and Centers ...
findingaids.cjh.org/?pID=2262096
World Ort. "DP Camps in Austria," ORT and the Displaced Persons Camps ...... ORT vocational training school (Rehabilitation Center) in Aschheim, dated 1949; ...

Not sure if Eschheim is Aschheim but worth looking into?

I bought a book before Christmas which was on Latvians in Insula Camp bei Berchtesgaden same time period.

Perhaps some Estonian researcher of the same subject has a list of all such camps?

Thank you very much, Annelie! This is a lot of good information! Eschheim might be Aschheim - that would definitely be worth looking into further! The photo you posted is indeed wonderful - I have spent a lot of time scrolling through pictures from Augsburg, wondering if I would see my parents faces in the group pictures! I tried posting a question to the facebook page you listed, last night. Unfortunately there was a problem with the facebook page that it would not update the page. I will try again today. Thank you so much for your help!

I sent a note off to U Minnesota (where I got the scans), and got a very quick response. The researcher believes that Eschheim and Aschheim are the same thing. Thanks for the links above; I am on their mailing list - and have been attending Estonian language classes next door to their offices... I should make use of some of those contacts to see if there are some other discussion groups of a kind where I can ask some questions... Thanks again, Annelie!
