German POWs units
I found a list of german and austrian prisoner captured by partisans in the Alpenvorland during 1944. I have their names, surnames, ranks and places of residence. I would like to know the units of these prisoners.
For example, Unteroffizier Embacher Joseph, from Salzburg, prisoner from 11th September 1944: can somebody tell me which was his unit, please?
Thank you very much in advance.

Such information is held by the Deutsches Dienstelle in Berlin and is restricted to family members only. However you could try the phone books - a quick search for Embacher Joseph, bei Salzburg brings up possible related members.

Re: German POWs units
Hi,
My Oppa was a POW. His name was Franz Kaiser. He was enlisted in the Deutsche Afrikakorps. I think he was held POW in Egypt. My Oma's brother Josef Specht was also held POW in Egypt. Both Franz Kaiser and Josef Specht were in the same unit I think. After their release the were sent to Austria and worked on the Flukolager in Vöcklabruck.
Are these 2 men in your list? I would be interested to know if you have any information on them. I have photos of them and others in the Deutsche Afrikakorps.
Kind regards
Mandy

Re: German POWs units
Hi Mandy,
your relatives can´t be on this list as it´s about prisoners captured by partisans in the Operationsgebiet Alpenvorland in 1944, that´s northern Italy.

You should contact WAst:

the ITS:

and the Red Cross Tracing Service:

and ask them about your relatives history. The more info (former adress, DOB, etc) you can gave them the better.

Re: German POWs units
I have a tin of family photos. I am trying to figure out who are in the photos as my family kept it all secret. They have all died. At 39 years old, I am the oldest living Kaiser in my family. I have a couple of photos of my Oppa taken in Africa. On the back of the photo it is written 1st June 1941(I will upload pics) Josef Specht was from Kešinci. They were in the same division together. I was told by my dad that my Oppa Franz was in the Deutsche Afrikakorps and my Oppa and Josef were POW in Egypt. They became close friends during their time in Africa. Not much more detail than that. These photos are personal family photos that I have. I hope they provide some insight to finding out which division he was in. I have not found any paperwork on the military so far. I have my Oppa's original Birth/baptism, marriage and death certificates. I'm not familiar on place names and am still learning this...forgive me I did not know this ! I'm still trying to get my head around the family history!
Re: German POWs units
Kaiser,
I presume that you have written the Wast to find their WWII records?
The Red Cross will also have information about their time in POW camps.
If you need address and email we can supply.
