Hitlers role during Munich's communist era

#1

Post by rob in cal » 28 Jul 2010, 23:28

Conspiracy enthusiasts have questioned what exactly Hitler was doing when Munich was under a communist leaning government in the spring and summer (I believe it lasted that long) of 1919. A lot of other future Nazis were outside of Munich in the FreiKorp units that ended up defeating the Reds, but Hitler was in Munich. The question is, what exactly was he doing there and why did he not flee Munich to join up with the Freikorp?

From all that is known,he was a fairly conventional barracks dweller. He attended Eisner's funeral and is not known to have been an activist for the right. One could even say, he agreed with the aims of the Munich revolution.
Only the re-conquest of Munich by the Whites in early May 1919 seems to have changed his perception radically.

My understanding is that after Munich's reconquest by the army that Hitler acted as an informant by outing people who had helped/supported the communist government. But that still doesn't answer what he did during the actual crisis.

According to the historian Ian Kershaw Hitler had been elected as Deputy Battalion Representative. On April 14 the Munich Soldiers Councils approved elections for barrack representatives. Hitler was elected and was his Battalions representative during the period of the "Red Republic". People who remembered Hitler at this time said he had voiced support for the Social Democrats
