A Waco UC-72, which was a designation used for several types of impressed civilian Waco airplane types?
This particular one could be a Waco SRE or a very similar subtype..

Correct on both counts: it is an UC-27, and it is a Waco SRE.

But, as you can tell from the lack of a glazed bombardier's posistion in the nose, it's not a Hudson.

Yes, pb! It's a Lockheed Ventura.
My source says it's an american PV-1 sitting next to an overgrown airstrip in one of Papua New Guinea's outer Islands. I'm not sure if he means the aircraft was operated by Americans or that it is just an American design. The 'outer islands' would normally refer to the Solomon Islands, however, and to the best of my knowledge the fight for those islands was strictly an American affair, whilst the struggle for mainland New Guinea was more of a mixed U.S./Australia/N.Z. operation.
