Hoping this isn't off topic as it isn't about the twentieth century, but you Army experts could help me out here. I believe that the first American army group commander was not Omar Bradley or even John Pershing, but William Tecumseh Sherman. Can anyone substantiate this?

probably not and you would need a better definition;

For example, Grant commanded three armies In October 1863 as the "Military Division of Mississippi. The armies were the Army of the Cumberland, The Army of the Tennessee, and the Army of the Ohio. He commanded two of them (Cumberland-Thomas) & Tennessee-Sherman) in joint operations at Chattanooga.

Technically, Grant was not the first commander of the command but Halleck
