Original WW2 German Parachute For Sale, Any Interest?

#1

Post by rickmcm » 17 Apr 2016, 00:00

Hi.

I bought a WW2 German parachute today, see pic of label, dated 1941.

I'm trying to determine if there might be any interest in such an item.

There would be interest.... depends on whether it has all it's "risers" (ropes), what type (Cargo, Aviator, or Paratroop ?), whether it has it's harness (if it had one ?), etc.... a paratroop or Aviator's complete rig is very pricey... just the chute (or Cargo types) considerable less... but still of collector interest.

Hi John

It's marked on the top line of the label as being a "Lastenfallschirm" which translates to Cargo Parachute.

It has all its 11 original risers which terminate on a ring (so it never had a harness). Although a number of those risers have snapped, all the sections of them appear at first glance to be there.

There is a gap of about 4' between each riser on the circumference of the chute, which would give the chute an approximate circumference of 44' so a diameter of about 14'.

I bought it as "Surplus" from a military museum in Virginia, so its provenance is solid.

Thanks!

Rick
