According to W. Trojca in his “Pak at War”, that vehicle was destroyed by friendly Ju-87 Stuka, near Chemery (France). It was of the 1 Kp/Pz.Jg.Abt.8.

On this picture from ebay.de, we can see that a Pz III was also victim of the “friendly” Stuka bombing. Also note the two bomb craters on both sides of the road.

Thanks Emmanuel,

The Stuka pilot apparently had a good aim but lousy IFF skills.

There are 2 bomb craters visible. So, there could have been either one Stuka with two underwing bombs or two Stuka with one centerline bomb each.

On the other hand, the tree trunk next to the crater does not seem much damaged. So, the bomb would have probably penetrated the ground before exploding.

The craters seem to fit 50 kg bombs - 5 m diameter and 1.5 m deep in average soil.

In this pic from “Nuts &Bolts nº 16” pág 16, there is another destroyed vehicle to the other side of the Zgkw; at the beginning of the slope.

Could it be a French truck? The cabin looks too old for a German Army truck. The numbers on the license plate seem to be of the French style.

Hi Emmanuel

I think you could be correct. The camouflage pattern looks French. The Germans were painting their vehicles plain "panzer" grey in 1940.

In the second half of 1940, after the end of the French campaign.

George,

Your picture shows a “8,8cm Flak 37 Selbstfahrlafette auf 18 ton Zugkraftwagen“ which was used primarily as a mobile Flak gun. See here for more pictures:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... &p=1228289
According to ebay, the soldier who took the picture was from Heeres-Flak-Art. Abt. (Sf) 304.

By comparison, the gun on the version destroyed at Chemery was not able to be raised up and was intended to shot at ground targets only such as bunkers, hence his nickname of “Bunkerflak“ aka Bufla.

The presence of a French truck here could provide a possible explanation for the mistake of the Stuka pilot(s).
