1/16 scale tanks

#1

Post by ridgback65 » 22 Jan 2015, 21:48

Hi Folks, I'm considering getting back into model making after a lay off of 30 years. I'm looking at buying a 1/16 scale tank. At the moment it's a toss up between a Trumpeter King Tiger or a Hobby Boss Tiger I.

The King Tiger is far more expensive but is very highly detailed which includes the interior/engine etc. The Tiger I is a bit of a mish mash of various variants and has no interior. However I can alter it and scratch build/modify as needed.

Anyway to get to the point, does anyone have any knowledge or experience in building either? Any advice or information wil be most gratefully received. :)

I had HobbyBoss' Pz.Kpfw.VI Tiger I 1:16 built by my armor modeler in 2013 and had it shown on my site. I wanted to show some pics but unfortunately, even with Google searching my site, I couldn't locate it. If you have enough patience you will locate it in my menu, it's surely there:

You're welcome, ridgback65.

No, that's my friend's decade old Tamiya's Tiger I 1:16. Anyway, now I've located my page, it's here:

I think Tiger would be a better choice because it's cheaper. The King Tiger may have interior details, but how can you show them once finished.

Thanks for the link, now that does look good and I am very tempted to go for the Tiger. As I said it is a good base model to modify/convert to whatever variant I wanted.

Reference the interior of the King Tiger, I was thinking about cutting away some of the hull and turret to show the interior but doing it in such a way that it could be displayed either with or without it on show.

Then there is the price difference, I can pick up the Tiger for around £60, the King Tiger is around £200.

For the price of one King Tiger, you can have 3 Tigers - Early, Mid and Late versions, with 20 pounds left in your pocket. Go for them!

To be honest I probably will go Tiger, as I say it's 30 years since my last build so if I make the odd mistake or two it will be easier to take on a £60 kit rather than a £200 one. The £140 left over will allow me to buy some upgrade parts for it. I'm probably going to go mid to late variant as opposed to early. Thanks for your input :)

Upgrade parts for Tiger 1:16? What parts and from where? I've never seen any.
For mid to late variant you'll need a lot of putty to make the zimmerrit coating. Good luck!

They seem to be pricey, a few parts and you can have another Tiger.

I know, but I wouldn't get them all, probably only a metal main gun barrel, I could do some scratch building too. To be honest though I am still very, very tempted by the Trumpeter King Tiger.

Not yet, I have ordered it from Germany. With the strength of the Pound against the Euro at the moment it has cost with shipping £155! I don't mind waiting a while for it to be delivered when I have made a saving of nearly 25% :)
