French Canon de 19 G Mle 1916 - 3D printed

#1

Hi - here is another project from my work bench - French Canon de 19 G Mle 1916 railway gun in 1/35th scale.
What can I say but that I like to model obscure subject matter.

I had planned to model this in the cheaper nylon material offered by shapeways but the
detail is a bit soft as you can see from the first part (part of the elevation mechanism).
While soft on detail, this part is positioned under the barrel so it won't be seen and I'll
probably use it just to keep cost down. The part made in nylon is about $2.50 while it's about
$8 in the photo sensitive resin material. The part does show however the benefit of using
a 3D printer for complex parts. I can't quite think how else I would have been able to make
it and had the sides turn out so symmetrical and uniform.

More pictures later this week.

Happy Modeling!

Hi - a few pictures of the gun carriage that I just rec'd in the mail.
This was printed at Shapeways in the new High Definition Acrylate (Black is only choice of color).
This part seems to be popular and is slowing down turn around times a bit. Part was about $36
and took about 17 days to get back (total time including shipping).

All in all, I am quite happy with the results. There is a general very slight softness to edges but its
acceptable and there appears at first glance very little prepping to do prior to painting.

More later -

Happy modeling!

A couple of additional photos show that I fitted the toothed gear into the mating holes in the
carriage and it fit perfectly.

A few shots of the rail car platform/carriage - This was printed as a single part and
is shown as it was received. Sometimes the parts show up with a very
faint coating of wax like substance (support material) which usually comes off
quite easy after running under very hot water.

Gun barrel and railings next -

Happy modeling!

A few pictures after spraying a light coat of
testors metalizer buffering paint on to get
a base. This base coat also hi-lites small
imperfections which are hard to see with
the semi-translucency of the resin material.
In this case I can just use a small wire brush
to "level" out some of the surface imperfections.

Back from family time so just a little update on my small French
railway gun project (I like how this is turning out so the next
project will be a much bigger French or American piece - or maybe
the German 28cm Bruno ?????).

I am waiting to get the barrel and loading crane/hoist back
so I went ahead and began work on the small hand wheels
and railing parts. Printing each part separately would have
cost about $5 each so I connected them up together and the
whole thing was only about $10. The small connections holding
everything together work like a sprue for printing but they are
tiny enough that I can just snap off the parts when I am ready
to use and with a little sanding they are ready to go.

Attached are a few pictures of the Cad file for the two small
part "mini-sprues".

Cheers

Hi - a couple new quick pictures of some of the parts that I just rec'd.

While the approach to do the railings is not optimal (I would have preferred just to print them attached to the carriage), it was inexpensive and they did get here intact. The main reason I sprued them together and laid them flat was just to give them strength so that they would not break during transit.

The ammo hoist is in the new Black acrylate material and looks to be the way to go for some parts. It is not a good solution for parts sprued together (Shapeways will actually reject the part if it is sprued) but if there is some substance to the part and it is a stand alone part, this is a cheaper and stronger material (very sandable and receives paint well). There is a very slight softening of details but for my purposes it is acceptable. The softening of details looks a lot like the sprues for the SOAR ART Dora kit. The part also is built with supports that Shapeways removes before sending you the parts. That has to be labor intensive and probably why they don't accept designs where multiple parts are sprued together. They did a good job removing the supports and you can barely make out where they were.

Happy modeling

Maybe one day, you'll be asked to display your models of French artillery at the Musée de l'Armée aux Invalides in Paris ! 8-)
