German 28 cm K5 (E) brace

#1

Post by EPOCH3 » 16 Nov 2016, 22:31

Hi - I have been working on a K5 project to build some of the more obscure versions of the gun. Please find attached some sketches/drawings for the barrel brace that had been part of the original design when it was thought the barrel would be too heavy and in need of a reinforcing brace. The brace itself was not needed in production but the hard points that it would have connected to on the wiege/cradle was still there on some early versions. The source material for this info was a very poor drawing in the preliminary version of the K5 manual. I Just thought I would share this data in case anyone else was interested in a variation of the model.
Regards
Greg

Greg,

It would be the brace, called "Sprengwerk", that we see on the famous picture of the first K5 (see http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0&t=189312 ), right?

Here is a better profile showing how the "Sprengwerk" was to be attached to the Rohrwiege

Only a few of the first batch of K5s had the early Rohrwiege design (cradle) that had hard points for connecting the Sprengwerk/bracing. Please refer to the low res photo snippet attached.

Hi Andrzej, the drawing is just a screen capture of the 1:1 scale drawing. As time permits, I will upload and share a dimensioned version of the 2D drawing

Hi - decided to print out a Sprengwerk/bracing part for my K5.
The part was just a little too big for the printer so I had to
split it into two halves. Cost was $4.50 (in 1/35th scale)

Part shown is how it printed with supports and after first
pass at cleaning off supports. Will wait until part is
fully dried to lightly sand edges etc.

Regards
post note - for anyone interested, I loaded the two separate
parts shown in the photos up to shapeways to
compare costs... $38.76 + $42.15 = $80.91 !!!!!

A few updates to the Spengwerk for 28cn K5 to use laser cut and printed parts.
Also made both versions (hard mounts were a bit different).
