SD.KFZ.9/6 Famo

#1

Post by JRingo » 18 Nov 2009, 18:24

I'm currently assembling a kit bash of a Sd.Kfz.9 Famo that has a recovery winch out of a Sd.Kfz.179 Bergepanther (resin Kit). The result would be of a prototype Sd.Kfz.9/6 recovery Famo. Only one or two were manufactured, probably due to the Famo was not structurally up to heavy recovery.
There is a partial photo of the prototype on the website "WW2incolor"
(Google Sd.Kfz.9/6)
Does anyone have any additional information about this prototype?

Based on the picture, I think the winch for Sd.Kfz.9/6 looks more like the winch used in MAN''s amphibious 8x8 Spezial-Pionierfahrzeug which preceded the design developed for the bergepanther winch, but without a view from above its hard to tell too much about the general arrangement.

Regards,
Chris.

Chris,
Where can I find more info about the winch you mentioned?

You can find a good picture of the Spezial-Pionierfahrzeug winch in Spielberger's "Panther & Its Variants." If you don't have access to the book just drop me an email at filmpanzer "at" gmail.com.

Chris,

Thank you very much. As in all things, half the battle is knowing where to look.

Here is a preview of what I've been able to do as of April of 2010. My thanks Dubliner for providing a direction and to New Connection Models for their support with the winch.

Thanks for the in progress picture and the update. I would love to the see the photos when your done. I am still trying to work out how the second smaller cable drum worked or why it was included. Based on what looks like a smaller diameter cable on the smaller drum, I am guessing that the 40t winch was really two winches with a common gear box and common power take-off.

Regards,

Chris.

Two things, first looking at the cables there appears to me to be some form of jib at the back. Second, why are the crew British ?

British? Didn't take the original photo, don't know.
The jib supports may be for securing the spade in transport position. This is the only photo I've been able to find.

The man sitting on the bonnet (hood) is very clearly wearing British Battle dress, note the white lining.

It could be British or it could be Kriegsmarine Grey-blue drill uniform. I have no idea what the time frame of the original photo was or where it was taken.

The KM drill uniform isn't lined in white material and while the man in your pic doesn't have any eagle and national roundel on his cap he should have and the man on the Famo doesn't have any such decoration on his cap.

Is this uniform correct for the British for the time period? I am not familiar with British uniforms.

That's it, introduced in 1938 and still being worn in the 50's.

Caption said " french occupation force in Germany 1945".
