Krupp 3,7cm Maschinenkanone Flak - 3D printed

#1

Post by EPOCH3 » 10 Feb 2017, 19:08

Please find attached a few pictures of my WWI era Maxim-Nordenfelt 3,7cm Maschinenkanone Flak. auf Raderlafette as manufactured by Fried. Krupp Essen. The platform/carriage/lafette is a reused and modified design that originally had be used for the old Schwere 9cm kanone.

I made several styles of ammo boxes to load the limber up with and ammo drums that will sit in the ammo feeding tray which I will upload pictures of when they come in. I also did a simple Sockel-Flak variation just for fun reusing the seat and weapon assemblies.

All in all this is a very delicate piece in 1/35th scale. Several areas were just too thin and broke in shipment but what broke seems to be easily repairable. The parts shown are just as received (still uncleaned) and are just dry fitted.

I also included a screen capture of the Cad model as reference.

Regards and happy modeling
Greg

a few more pictures of the Krupp 3,7cm Maschinenkanone Flak
showing how I reused the seat and weapon assemblies to
make the Sockel-Flak variation.

Please find attached a new picture showing the circular ammo drum for the 1/32nd scale 3,7cm Mk – I am amazed that all the tiny holes in both sides of the drum actually printed open.

I also decided print the main piece in 1/15th scale just for fun and to see how it would turn out in a larger scale. Please see attached pictures. It pays off trying to model in 1:1 scale up front - you can easily scale and just reprint. I sprayed a primer coat on it just to see it better - the one side is still a little greasy/waxy from residual support material and I will clean it off but you can almost read the builder’s plate.

Hi - I built the Krupp 3,7cm Maschinenkanone Flak last year and originally had printed it using shapeways. The model turned out nice but in 1/35th scale I thought it would probably be too tiny to print on the Form 2 so I decided to print it again in 1/15th scale as a comparison.

Attached are a few pictures of the model made over the weekend. The pictures just show a dry fitting with nothing glued yet. Also, I chopped off supports but have not yet done final cleanup and/or sanding.

It turned out quite nice so I decided I will go ahead and print the carriage and limber as well (in 1/15th scale)

I was surprised that the holes in the ammo drum actually printed pretty clean - the belt holding the ammo together also printed pretty well.
Several areas of the weapon system were very thin but I will thicken up those areas and reprint again in near future.

Total resin used (approx.)
model parts: 38.71ml (about $5.77)
supports: 40.11 (about $5.97)

Here is a picture showing the shapeways printed version (on the right) sitting next to my newly printed version (both 1/15th scale).
The shapeways part cost about $18 while mine was about $3.40.

A few areas on my model need alteration but I think it is actually better in many ways to the shapeways printed part.

Hi, I printed out another stand today and an ammo box to
display the other configuration for handling/feeding ammo
to the receiver.

Hi - I 3D printed my Maschinekanone project in 1/35th and 1/16th scales about two years ago. My standalone model of the gun in 1/16th scale always looked sort of naked though so I decided to print out the gun platform/carriage and Protze this past weekend (in 1/16th scale) to go with.

The model is only dry fit - I have some cleanup/sanding to do and then I will add some additional small details. I also had a print failure on the carriage wheels which I redid (not shown attached tough). I am thinking that next, I have to do some horses or mules to pull it with.

Happy modeling & go big (ha ha)

I was browsing the forum looking for bunker plans, as I've recently purchased a small filament 3 printer, and came across your topics. Outstanding work, not only in terms of 3D design but also in quality of printing and assembly. Scale modelling sure as evolved exponentially in the last few years and I'm very happy to witness it. All the best, keep having fun and thank you very much for sharing your work like this.
