Guns of August is outstanding. I can read it time and again.

I also heartily recommend Alistair Horne's Price of Glory (Verdun)

The best general history is Hew Strachan's First World War which came out 2 or 3 years ago. Pithy yet brilliant, with a lot of rare sources consulted.

Halder what do you think of John Keegan's treatment of the subject? BTW as per Guns of August I agree with your assessment but I was rather disappointed the author just skimmed over the Masurian Lakes battle whereas she goes into great detail on Tannenberg.

Don't like Keegan's book. Not a patch on Strachan's - and he tells the story better with half the words!

I currently reading Douglas Haig : War Diaries and Letters /ed. by Gary Sheffield & John Bourne. A must I think! History has not been kind to Haig creating an image of an unimaginative soldier but I think his diary does much to dispel this:
In view of the successes obtained by the 'Tanks', I suggested that he [Admiral Bacon, CinC Dover Patrol] should carry out experiments with special flat bottomed boats for running ashore and landing a line of Tanks on the beach with object of breaking through wire and capturing Enemy's defences
Entry on 18th September 1916

Edit: Typo

Kind Regards

That is really amazing. You are right - that's the last kind of statement one would expect from Douglas Haig

"Men of Steel", by Michael Reynolds. It's a good book, but not great.
