Marine Defence Battalion commander James Devereux also comes across as a martinet and to put it mildly,a fool,in Gavan Daws' Prisoners of the Japanese: POWs of World War II in the Pacific.
A few tears ago I can in contact with another Wake Marine who ended up in Shanghai(he was a school teacher after the war)but any discussions on his imprisonment was taboo--he was too traumatised by his ordeal,even after 60 years,to speak about it.
