Upcoming books- "Gauleiter" & "Leaders of the SS" (in 2012)

#1

Post by Michael Miller » 08 Aug 2010, 22:53

Two new books by myself and Andreas Schulz to be completed and released by Roger Bender on an as yet undetermined dates in 2011 (of course, nothing is ever carved into stone, so please don't kill me if I've miscalculated):

Gauleiter: The Regional Leaders of the Nazi Party and Their Deputies, 1925-1945, Volume I, with 47 biographies (see list below).

and, at long last:

Leaders of the SS & German Police, Volume I: Reichsführer-SS - SS-Gruppenführer (Hans Haltermann to Hilmar Moser), with 74 biographies (see list, also below)

Best wishes,
~ Mike Miller

Great news about these new books! I'll definitely have to buy them, however I was wondering if you will every publish your Knight's Cross of the SS and Police volumes, that you are currently selling on cdrom, in book format?

Phew. Good job Hildebrandt's in there... as he'll be the subject of the foreword. :)

I can't stress too much how useful Mike's Gauleiter books are if you're studying the personalities of the upper echelons of the NSDAP and their backgrounds. They're the most comprehensive overview I've seen in any language.

You've been more patient than anyone on that subject, krichter33, and I thank you for that. About a week ago I ran the SS & Polizei RKT manuscript by Helion & Co., and things look somewhat good (but as yet not entirely certain).

And many thanks to all for the kind and encouraging words!

Sincerely,
~ Your friend, Mike

Further thanks for additional comments. I should have noted also that Mark Costa wrote a beautiful foreword to the first Gauleiter volume, while Richard Hargreaves has agreed to pen the foreword for Gauleiter #2.

I've decided to add a further ten biographies to the count for Leaders of the SS & German Police, Volume II. It will include most of the "M"'s (stopping short of Heinrich ["Gestapo"] Müller as he's just too much work at this time). So that brings the count to 74 for Volume II (3 more than in Volume I); here are the additional names:

Dr. jur. Hans-Georg Viktor von M a c k e n s e n
Dr. jur. utr. Benno M a r t i n
Ewald Robert Valentin von M a s s o w
Dr. rer. pol. Karl Theodor Alexander Heinrich von M a u r
Emil M a z u w
Wilhelm M e i n b e r g
Dr.-Ing. Johannes M e y e r
August Edler von M e y s z n e r
Paul Josef M o d e r
Hilmar Hermann Robert Ernst M o s e r

Best wishes,
~ Mike

And here's a sample- one of the smaller biographies in the collection. Loeper will appear in Volume II of both SS and Gauleiter.

“The link between the SA’s and the party’s consolidation at the Reich level was the personnel office…. Although its original purpose had been to aid in the purges of Stennes sympathizers in the ranks of the SA and party, Hitler quickly assigned additional powers to the office, so that by June Loeper not only recommended the appointment and dismissal of the four most important Gau officials (Gauleiter, deputy Gauleiter, business manager [Gaugeschäftsführer], and treasurer [Gauschatzmeister]), but was also compiling a collection of personnel files that included all party functionaries from the district [Kreis] level on up. Loeper was an ideal choice to be in charge of this unprecedented accumulation of potential power… [he] was a simple soldier who, once convinced of Hitler’s historical role, obeyed him as he would have obeyed a military superior- without question and without regard for his own personal inclinations.” (Source: Orlow, History of the Nazi Party: 1919-1933, p. 225)

00.00.1930 In a letter concerning the Bauhaus, which was then located in Dessau, wrote: “… the Bauhaus belongs to Jerusalem and not to Dessau”. After the Nazi seizure of power, he played a key role in taking over the assets of that art movement.

00.12.1932-23.10.1935 Returned to his assignment as Gauleiter of “Gau Magdeburg-Anhalt der NSDAP”, the duties of which had been held by Paul Hofmann in his absence.
05.05.1933-23.10.1935 Reichsstatthalter in Braunschweig and Anhalt. In this capacity, he came into conflict with Helmut Nicolai, appointed in Spring 1933 as Regierungspräsident of Magdeburg, which fell under the NSDAP jurisdiction of Loeper’s Gau Magdeburg-Anhalt. Loeper was a domineering and arrogant leader who refused to allow competition within his region. Nicolai’s philosophy differed from that of Loeper; he had once expressed his disdain, in a work entitled, The Future Foundations of the Constitution and the State in the National Socialist Order- for the existence of independent Länder- such as Thüringen, Sachsen, and Brandenburg-Anhalt. He had considerable influence in this regard, as he was attached to the Reich Ministry of Interior in order to assist in a planned restructuring of administrative boundaries within the Reich. John Hiden writes of the culmination of this power struggle in the following passage:

“Ultimately, however, it was Nicolai's personal choice to confront Loeper, rather than something conditioned by his office or even necessarily engendered by institutional opposition. His was a 'personal crusade on behalf of professional administrative orderliness in the face of ever encroaching party disorder'. Ultimately, he failed to match the combined weight of Gauleiter Loeper and Röver and eventually fell victim to the former's vendetta. After being forced to confess his homosexuality in March 1935, Nicolai was expelled from the party. Ironically, Loeper hardly had time to enjoy his triumph before dying in the autumn of that same year.” (Source: Hiden, Republican and Fascist Germany: Themes and Variations in the History of Weimar and the Third Reich, 1918-45, p. 108)

10.05.1933 Appointed as an ehrenhalber (honorary) Gauarbeitsführer.

The family lived in Friesack before moving to Rosslau an der Elbe where Eduard Loeper took over a pharmacy.
* Religion: Protestant
* Married on 12.07.1915. No children indicated in SS file.
* Height: 5 ft., 9 in. (176 cm).
* Hitler’s eulogy of Dr. Loeper, delivered 26.10.1935:

“When Fate is especially fond of a man and wishes to bestow upon him the best thing in the world, it will give him loyal friends, men who are resolved to share with him equally both joy and sorrow, men whom nothing can lead astray, men who, particularly in days of need, stand by him firm and resolute. I have been given a most generous share of this happiness and good fortune such as perhaps only few people in this world have.
Yet this happiness of so many years turns to pain when I now see how this and that membrer of the community of fighters is called to his Maker. When I speak here today, I am speaking as the happy- yet now so unhappy- Führer who must now accompany of member of his old guard to the grave, a man the likes of whom are rare even in our Movement.
Once he came to me when one could expect nothing more from this Movement than sacrifices and troubles, persecution and abuse. And truly it was only love of Germany which led him to that host of inseparable men who were determined to take up and puruse the battle for a new Germany against all odds. This man, with his boundless love of Germany, also had an unshakeable faither [in me]. This faith was combined, in his case, with a unique loyalty [to me]. He was one of the most loyal members of the old guard. During the time of struggle, we never spoke about it; no one would have understood it anyay. But today, at the bier of my dead comrade in arms, I must express it in words for German youth, that they may aspire to the same.
The new Reich was not given to us; it had to be hard won in battle, and in this fight only an overabundance of love for Germany, of faith, of willingness to sacrifice, and of loyalty allowed [us] to triumph. That is something the German Volk must know. For it is my wish that the names of these first apostles of our Movement go down in German history for all eternity. Party comrade Loeper was a zealot, but he was more than that: a strong, selfsufficient man as hard as granite. He was persistent as only few are, untiring in his work and never swaying from the conviction: in the end we must succeed!
Hence for many of us this Party comrade was a model, in his unselfish modesty too, in his personal simplicity and in his lack of emotionalism: he was strictly a helper devoted to our great mutual cause.
Formerly the captain of the pioneers of the World War, he became a captain and pioneer of the National Socialist Weltanschauung, of our Revolution, and thus of our new German Reich. By having waged this battle in his lifetime, he lives on for us in death. He is a man for the German future. He deserves to be distinguished from the masses of hundreds of thousands and millions and be held up before the nation for all time! And this applies particularly to German youth. They shall hear this, and they shall learn from it. They shall once again realize that the old fealty was not a virtue of the Teutons. The new Reich was built up with this virtue as its basis. This Reich would not be standing today were it not founded upon this fidelity [to me].
A wonderful life has thus come to a close. Yet today we are all overcome by deep sorrow that our Party comrade, our Gauleiter and our Reichsstatthalter has been forced to leave us so soon, one of the old guard. Our hearts bleed when we see how our ranks slowly begin to thin out.
But as the old passes, so the young grows to take its place. For this old guard did not live in vain, did not struggle and fight in vain. From their work and their influence has sprung forth the richest of blessins- and Party Comrade Hauptmann Loeper was one of the most blessed of men.” (Source: Dr. Max Domarus [Ed.], Hitler. Hi Mike,

Do you know if your books or one of your books will come out this summer or fall? Bender seems to be publishing Yerger's books like hot cakes and I really enjoy them as any Bender book is a excellent book. Except for "Hitler's Poltiische Generale" by Hoffkes, nothing has been published on Gauleiter's in 25 years and a book like yours is long over due. The SS is a great subject but it's good to balance it out with different personalities from the NSDAP, SA, NSKK, NSFK, HJ and RAD. If anyone was to start a book on the Leaders of the RAD or HJ, it would be icing on the cake.

Best,

James
