More than interesting, spellbounding.

I talked with distant relatives several years ago about their experiences in Germany during the war years. They would all talk about how the Russians would swoop over the countyside during the last few months, how scared they were, 24/7. Then these relatives would start dissing the Jews, and everybody else, but never would tell what they(Germans) did.I just quit talking to them after a while.
Now I go back and hang out with my mom and dad, every couple years, and realize they are as racist now as their relatives were then. :(

Probably in any German family there will be stories from WW2, as part of so to say the "family's memory".

Most of these have little to do with the ideologies spread over the media today, and efforts to bring them in line have little value.

I don't think asking what's left of that generation to speak up or share experiences will be of any value. It is something that they had brought upon themselves and if they have any regrets, it would only be because they had lost the war. The fear posed upon them by the Russians was only a small retribution compared to what they had done to the rest of Europe. While finishing my book on the 'Final Solution" I realized just how saturated Germany was with Sub Camps and German Employers who used forced labor for their own benefit so anyone who says they never knew what was going on is full of crap, they all knew.

Best,

James

It's not to say that I don't love Germany. I am taking my first vacation there next spring and the past is left with that dying generation.

James

Coburg22, you are right about the vast number of *sub-camps* I saw a map once of all the major camps(work/extermination/transfer/etc.) and all the satelite camps, man, they were all over Germany/Poland/Eastern France/Austria.

Even the simple maps in this book series(picture included) have camps listed/shown I never heard of.
I now have 7 other titles to this grouping.
