Books on Julius Streicher
[Split from "Streicher dancing"]
For books on Julius Streicher see Randall Bytwerk's "Julius Streicher", Peter Varga's "Number One Nazi Jew-Baiter" (best book, despite the comical title), "Little Man, What Now? Der Sturmer in the Weimar Republic" by Denis Showalter, and "Racketeers of Hatred: Julius Streicher and the Anti-Semitic International" by Louis Bondy (a very rare book, but written from the standpoint of a contemporay -1946). Bondy studied Streicher's career, his trial at Nuremberg, and the various anti-Semitic figures and movements around the world - there also much info. on Oswald Mosley and his BUF associates, Nazi Arnold Spencer Leese, Canadian fascist Adrien Arcand, and a few lesser figures as far away as South America.

Re: Streicher dancing
"The Limits of Hitler's Power" by Edward Petersen. - Wonderful book. Recently found a copy in the local college library (where I have to be a student or clergyman to check out books) took as many notes as I could, but time was short- luckily found a good condition copy, with dust jacket, via abe.com for just $15.00! Highest recommendation. MUCH info. on the constant infighting and petty bickering among the Reich ministerial and Party leadership, with a particular focus on Bavaria (Muenchen-Oberbayern, Franken, and Schwaben). The author delved deep into original documentation from pre-war, wartime, and postwar (notably de-Nazification records); you'll learn a lot about Adolf Wagner, Ritter von Epp, Hans-Georg Hofmann, Ludwig Siebert, Streicher, Martin, Holz, Wahl, etc. ... there's even some interesting data on the little-known Kreisleiter/acting Gauleiter Zimmermann. His biography is here (sadly, he's no longer with us): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_N._Peterson .

Peterson's book ("The Limits of Hitler's Power") is an excellent work indeed! For such a scholarly book, it is an enjoyable and exciting read. Like Michael Miller said, it's chock full of information about the fights and feuds between the various Nazi leaders. The Third Reich was literal Soap Opera!

Re: Streicher dancing
trespasser,
Unfortunately, the book by Vargas is very hard to find. I think it was privately published only in numbered copies. Mine was signed by the author. It is a very good book however, so I suggest you be patient and continue to check abebooks.com periodically. "Racketeers of Hatred" is also extrememly rare and very expensive, but a very informative book. If you do not have any biographies on Streicher, I suggest you start with Randall Bytwerk's book, which is affordable and highlights Streicher's career and periodical "Der Stürmer". It does not have many of the personal details on Streicher as can be found in Varga's book, but it gives a very good overview. There is also Dennis Showalter's book "Der Stürmer in the Weimar Republic", which is a very good study of his newspaper in the pre-1933 years. It contains much biographical detail of his early life and career. One of the old books I have highlighting Streicher is "Hitler's Twelve Apostles" by author Oswald Dutch. In the chapter on Streicher, he tells a gossipy story about how Streicher used to walk around his office in bathing trunks! The story is repeated in Robert Edwin Herzstein's Time-Life WWII "classic" "The Nazis". I do not think it's very credible, but smear was quite common writing about these fellows as far back as the 1930's and clearly illustrates the hatred the world press had for these men. "Caesar's in Goose Step" is another example of this kind of book. There is a story in the book highlighting an experience the author had on one of Ley's cruiseships. Ley was still drunk from the night before ("Sorry, but last night found me alone with a bottle of cognac, and well, you know how that goes..."). William Bayles (the author) speaks of Ley's room littered with trash, broken and empty liquor bottles, half-eaten sandwiches, odors of cigar smoke and leftover wurst. Ley, with a bandage around his hand (he had cut it opening a liquor bottle) waved a bloody hand at his guest "Mr Americano! How are you?" and proceeds to clear a coffee table simply by sweeping everything off it onto the floor with his arm. Ley's adjudant had to be physically supported by his aide de camp as he was too drunk to stand. These kind of stories are told over and over by these journalists of the 1930's.

Re: Streicher dancing
Thank you Duncan you are becoming my "go to guy" for third reich info haha. I will keep an eye out for the Vargas book as it looks to be very interesting. I have seen "Racketeers of Hatred" on ebay but for a very expensive price, of course this will relate to to its rarity. I will keep an eye out also for some of the earlier information in books from first hand accounts etc from the 30's. I am currently reading the Robert Ley book by Smelser but have not yet seen a mention of Bayles visit on the Ley ship but there are numerous other mentions of his heavy drinking and excessess. Hopefully the Varga book will pop up soon on ebay or abebooks.
Thanks again Duncan!

Re: Streicher dancing
The William Varga book on Streicher is hard to find, but it does pop up. I got a copy on Ebay a few years ago for very little money.
It was published in 1981 by Carlton Press in NY. My copy is an ordinary commercially available book, i.e., not signed or numbered. It's posted on Amazon, though they have no copies available. The jacket matches the lurid book title!

Re: Streicher dancing
Despite the lurid title and dust jacket, it's not a bad book at all. Both Randy Bytwerk's bio & this are good accounts of the Frankenfuehrer...

Re: Books on Julius Streicher
Hi,
Has anyone on this thread read "Little Man, What Now? Der Sturmer in the Weimar Republic" by Denis Showalter mentioned by JD? If so, is it a good semi biography of Streicher as well as his newspaper works?
Thanks

Re: Books on Julius Streicher
Showalter's book is worth it. There is much biographical material on Streicher with focus on his early career up to 1933 with advent of Hitler, however it does not cover the later 1930's , his Party trial and deposition as Gauleiter in 1940, his exile to his farm during the war, or his post-war trial. Still, it is a good book on Streicher worth getting, as it does say much about his early life, his training as a schoolteacher, his first wife and family, his WWI experience, his legal struggles during the Weimar period, "Fips" the cartoonist, his "pornographic" obsessions, his deputy Hoelz, etc..

Re: Books on Julius Streicher
I did an article, "Der Stuermer and the Stuermer Verlag, 1923 - 1945", which appeared in Roger Bender's "Military Advisor" magazine (Vol. 22, No. 2), which might be useful to those interested in this area. The magazine is readily available on Roger's web site....
