The Stalingrad Trilogy, Glantz

#1

Post by Cult Icon » 01 Jan 2015, 04:06

This thread is a discussion about the Stalingrad Trilogy, currently with 4 operational volumes and 1 appendix volume.

1. To the Gates of Stalingrad
2. Armageddon in Stalingrad
3. Endgame at Stalingrad I/II

I have heard of a new volume in the works, is that true?

After Stalingrad and Smolensk I wonder what Glantz is working on now?

Oh, by the way, hi Cult Icon, glad to see you joined this forum! Another good one is Feldgrau, though it's a bit quiet. :)

As for the Stalingrad Trilogy....wonderful!...both David M. Glantz and Jonathan M. House have done all of us a great service. The Trilogy is not perfect, but I don't think they were trying for that. We all can add, expand, and develop the story. I'm working on my small part, guided by volumes such as these...

As for what is next...a rework of After Stalingrad might be in order. As well as several new Stalingrad volumes might be in the works for the new year!

All the best.... Happy New Year!

Thanks for the greetings!

I'd say that I prefer if Glantz moves away from pre-autumn 1943 and focus on the events afterwards. However, there are other things:

'To the Gates' has a very operational focus. It is very condensed. The events here could easily warrant a trilogy on its own, with more tactical research/details. For instance, the battle of 5TA vs. 9.Pz/11.Pz could be elaborated upon. Other historians could work on this.

I completed "To the Gates of Stalingrad". Excellent read.

The Caucasus (AGB) has relatively little coverage that is continued in book II (only around 100 pages plus in total).

Now onto Armageddon in Stalingrad!

I am halfway through Armageddon and the detail is almost overwhelming at times, causing pauses in reading. The battle was one of extreme intensity, and of many repetitive clashes until the next major move.

I have just noticed this in the intro to "Endgame".. It is hinted that there is progress towards another book on the soviet winter counteroffensive 42-43.

The russian historian Igor Sdvizhkov wrote the book under the name "General Lizyukov and His Army". In it is described a creation ofthe 5 TA and the first fights of army in the summer of 1942.
