My new book "Nanjing 1937: Battle for a Doomed City" will be published by Casemate later this year. The main focus is on the month-long campaign south of the Yangtze in late 1937 between the fall of Shanghai and the conquest of Nanjing. It is based on a variety of sources, mostly Chinese and Japanese.

Looking forward to reading your book, Peter.

Will be interesting to see if you can come up with a new perspective: this is a very difficult topic with lots of potential minefields.

What is your next project?

Thanks very much. Hope you like the book! I'm focusing more than previous Nanjing books on the military aspect, but at the same time demonstrating that atrocities took place from day one of the campaign. The Nanjing massacre was the bloody crescendo of this accelerating violence.

My next project will also be about the Second Sino-Japanese War. I'm considering two different subjects and haven't decided yet which one it will be.

From a preview of my book: "A very important book about the Japanese defeat of Chinese Nationalist forces in defending their national capital, Nanjing... His final chapter on the Rape of Nanjing is one of the most powerful descriptions of those events as well as perhaps the very best analysis of why this most horrendous event occurred."
