Another new Stug Abteilung unit history to be released!

Peko publishing is planning to release "Illustrated History of the Sturmgeschutz Abteilung 202" by Norbert Szamveber. Along with Jason Mark's upcoming release "The Iron Cross Brigade," that makes two new Stug unit histories!

I can't wait to get my hands on this one! So many authors forget to mention the impact Sturmgeschutz abteilungs had during the war! I need all the info on Stug's I can find! Thanks for sharing Krichter!

What I'd like to see is completeness. I've got no problem with the Stug histories. But to me it would be nice if a publisher decided to, say, publish a history on ALL the panzer divisions or ALL the tiger battalions or ALL the stug units rather than sprinkles in all directions. Am I the only one who would like that?

I agree! Maybe their problem is they don't have enough authors willing to sit down and write the histories of 25 panzer divisions and 30-35 StuG battalions haha. Although I'd definitely buy them all!!

Sturmgeschutz Vor! by Kurowski gives small bios of each Stug unit, and though it is by Kurowski it is actually very good. And Fire Brigades by Nevenkin gives histories of all the Panzer divisions from 1943-1945. And Schneider's Tigers in Combat 1 and 2 does the same for the Tiger units.

If we limit ourselves to the captured German records at NARA (there are more extensive records at BAMA but if I have understood correctly, there is not even a catalog of all the material they have). There are no comprehensive records for the Sturmgeshütz Battalions/Brigades. You have to scan the controlling headquarters for references. Even if you find references to the unit in question, they don't Always tell you what you would really like to know.

I have some experience with the records of AGS during Operation Barbarossa. So far I have only seen reports from 190th Assault Gun Battalion, which cover a short period of time (1st - 20th July). They are very interesting and give a lot of insight into how the battalion was employed but in no way are they comprehensive. Spread among the AGS records there are some other interesting reports (t.ex. 670th Tank Destroyer Battalion, I./14th Flak Regiment, 6./Lehr Regiment "Brandenburg") but they have convinced me that in most cases the most you can hope for with units smaller than division size is a snapshot of the unit for a short period of time.

Unfortunately yes. Still, JJF and others have managed to cover most of the Tiger battalions with dedicated narratives. If they could hit them all I'd be delighted.

I have Sturmgeshutz Vor and it is pretty good, its nice to read unit histories of smaller size groups.

This book is the most informative Stug history that I've ever read. Highly recommended. Thomas Anderson's 2 Stug books also help.
