Hurtgen Forest from the German Side?

#1

Post by panzerhan » 27 May 2016, 14:12

There are several books about the Battle fot the Hurtgen Forest, that we can choose from. As I'm planning to buy one of these to read, I'm reading the reviews of them; some of them positive, some of them negative. But I think they generally told the story from the American side. Are there any books that tells it from the German point of view?

There is one that deals with the Hurtgen Forest, but as a part of a unit history. Nash's Victory Was Beyond Their Grasp. But an actual detailed combat history of the entire Hurtgen campaign from the German side, in English, I haven't found any yet. And believe me I've looked.

Thank you so much Krichter. It's better to read that one. And what about the books from the American point of view, do you suggest any particular one?

Couple of books in German I'd recommend:

Hölle im Hürtgenwald by Trees and Hohenstein

and

Schicksale zwischen den Fronten. Ein Kiegstagebuch für die Bevölkerung des alten Landkreises Monschau vom 20. August 1944 bis 20. Mai 1945, also by Hohenstein.

,,,from the American point of view, I still like MacDonald's the best, and A Dark Bloody Ground, though The Longest Battle by Yeide is good also.
