Unit Histories - Waffen-SS

#1

Post by Marcus » 09 Jun 2003, 21:02

I'm going to add a list of books dealing the the unit to all the unit histories on the site and also have one thread on each branch (Heer, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe & Waffen-SS) as well as one on the other Axis forces and one on the Allied units, active here in the Reference Material section.
The books listed are either dedicated totally to the unit in question or provides a lot of detailed info on the unit even though it is not totally focused on that unit.

I think this will be an excellent research tool and I hope you all will help out making it better tool.

Do these books deal with Wiking in general or only the Finnish unit?

They deal with Finnish volunteers in various Wiking units. But it's kinda hard to drew a line whatever books are focused to some sub-unit in which Finnish served or it is a wider history of whole Wiking. For example Jokipii book "Panttipataljoona" is the most detailed history of Finnish SS-Volunteer battalion avalable but IMHO it's also the best unit history of whole Wiking during 41-summer 43,because all Wiking actions are covered.

I don't know can Finnisches Freiwilligen Bataillon der Waffen-SS considered as separate unit because it served with Wiking when it was transfered to front and it was named as IV./SS-Rgt.Norland 21.1.42 and its final title was from 20.5.42 III.(finn.)/SS-Rgt.Norland.

with best/Juha

Juha,

Yes, I'm aware of the problems with "separating" such a unit, but I think it is the right thing to do in this case.

However, books that are very good as unit histories on the whole units can of course be listed under both headlines.
