Hi Sturm,
Deckenspiegel (ceiling mirror) I believe refers to the reflective mirrors which give this artillery aiming circle its periscope function (shown as #41 in this diagram):

A question of almost 3 years ago !! 8O :)

I guess it is a naval model, no? . Do you know the different models of naval rangefinders in use in the Kriegsmarine ?? :?

On the other hand, Any idea about this recce camera?

Hi,
this appears to be a hand held aerial recce camera of the HK ("HandKammer") series. I think, this is a HK 12,5/ 7x9 in the observer's bay of a He 115.

"Artillery Gun Director Aiming Circle " I think this is rubbish, unfortunately I can't read the Russian. Why would an aiming circle be periscopic? Totally unnecessary. Furthermore aiming circles fully rotate ('circle' is a bit of a clue), the optics shown do not support this because they to not correct an image as a dial sight does (and this is periscopic and does fully rotate). I suspect this is a 'director' in the naval and coast artillery sense and someone who does not understand the subject has made a very bad translation into English. The graticules also seem possible in such a director.

Hello,

Max, even if I can't russian I found you document interresting, you does it comes from ?

gambadier, the exact puurpose of the richkreis 31 is to plot azimut angles and vertical angles. I can't explain myself the presence of such a small periscope neither.

Hello gambadier and Eax-E,

Perhaps I used the incorrect terminology but please see http://bulcomersks.com/index.php/44-opi ... le-pab-2am for what the manufacturer calls a "periscopic artillery aiming circle".
The source of the Russian book is http://www.ebay.com/itm/Book-Boussole-A ... 0534185255. I can't vouch for the translation as I am sadly neither an expert in Russian nor optical instruments. :)
Cheers,
Max

Hi,

Thanks. I didn't knew that Soviets made such documents. A good tip in the endless way of the archive collecting :)

I'm glad to be of some help. Maybe you can still purchase it. The price seemed reasonable for a collector with an interest in the subject.

It seems that I already have the german manual (a digital copy, I'm not a collector of objects) of the optics presented in this russian manual but I will keep an eye open

Maxschnauzer that is most certainly an aiming circle (or director in the Queen's English). Presumably the periscopic add-on is for trench use, which is not the primary purpose of an aiming circle. There are pictures of UK directors covering some 75 years and explaining their use at http://nigelef.tripod.com/fc_laying.htm

Thanks for the very informative link, gambadier. I don't disagree with anything you say here.

Hello Sturm,

Why a Zeiger-Zieleinrichtung 34 ??? It's a Rundblickfernrohr 32, isn't it ?

Regards
Hi Sturm,

We were both right ! I just learned that the device with the gears under the optic actually a Zieleinrichtung 34 is.
