Re: Pontoon Bridges and assault boats
Hi Sturm 78,
that´s a so called "Herbert Bridge" (Herbert-Gerät, Brückengerät H, Herbert-Brückengerät M 16). This bridge is sometimes called the "Italian Meccano Bridge", a mobile streetbridge out of iron, named for the Austrian officer Franz Herbert, which designed this bridge; introduced into the Austrian army in 1912. "Herbert bridges" were captured during the occupation of Austria and Czechoslovakia by German troops. There were special army service regulations H.Dv. 220/3h from 1942 "Brückenbau mit Brückengerät H (Herbert-Brückengerät M 16).
Here an interesting movie from 23rd November 1916 crossing the Danube river by a "Herbertbrücke":

Hi,
here another pic of the Herbert-bridge. The translation of the text: Herbert-street-bridge. The bridge is formed by parts fixed side by side, which is composed by two 45 t - ships and an iron bridge construction 25 m long.

Hi Bert,
Where did you find the image "Herbert-bridge.jpg (68.4 KiB)"? Was it a manual of some kind?
I have very little Info about this bridge, so a reference would be appreciated. Maybe I can find it online or in a library.
Cheers
Leo

Re: Pontoon Bridges and assault boats
Hi Leo,
sorry, I forgot to tell the source of the pic : http://www.pioniere.at/index.php?tradit ... d-pzstbb-3
It is a site from Austrian engineers. Maybe the pic and the text is out of a manual, but there is no information about it.
But there were special army service regulations H.Dv. 220/3h of the Wehrmacht from 1942 called "Brückenbau mit Brückengerät H (Herbert-Brückengerät M 16)".
Best regards
Bert

Re: Pontoon Bridges and assault boats
Hi Kerry,
that is no pontoon bridge, but a ferry. Sorry, I have no idea, what ferry it could be. Sorry, that´s not my field of interest. Maybe it is a ferry on the Rhine river.
Regards
Bert
