Gas Mask Identification Help

#1

Post by sqnldr » 10 Jul 2011, 14:38

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help me identify this gas mask and case. I bought this off a dealer who found it in a bunker in northern france in the 1980's. It is as found. The gas mask has had its eyes cut off. I can only assume the solider who used them did this as this is how they were found in the case. There was also a water bottle cover (i included a pic) which has been largely eaten over the years.
I was also wondering what the case build into the lid of the gas mask case was for? Im guessing replacement lenses for the eyes?

Does anyone know the year roughly and what unit would have used this type?

As always I appreciate your help and knowledge to help identifying these. It always makes items in your collection more facinating when you know more of the details.

Thanks
David

the case in the lid is indeed for replacement lenses.
but the gasmask itself doesn't look german to me with that extra round, perforated filter.
the iron case looks german.

Does it have AUER in big letters on the lid? Its a less common variation of german gasmask cannisters, the small container in the lid is for a spare set of anti mist inner lenses in their greasepaper packet. The Mask is I think French or Italian from the shape of the filter but I cannot think of any reason why the top half should be cut away. Sometimes panzerschreck teams used gasmasks without the filters on to protect their faces from the rockets backblast as early models didnt have the clip on face shield. But I dont think this is the explaination for this.

The mask looks like remains of a postwar ANP M51 Léger.
With best regards, Ilya.

I need help identifying this mask I bought on a Berlin street corner. I'm concerned as it's been on display outside my classroom and, with the recent scare over asbestos, I need to know the risk level. I'd really be grateful to anyone who can offer some info-
