How was equipment allocated between the different branches?

Hi
This is only for German Manufactured equpment and not for foreign captured equipment.

I have been wondering for a while how weapons/vehicles after manufacture were split between the various branches. For example a Kar98k rifles. For every 100 made
80 go to the Heer
10 to the Luftwaffe
8 to the Waffen-SS
2 to the Kriegsmarine .

Or was it that orders requested by the Heer went to the Heer, Luftwaffe to Luftwaffe etc etc. Or the final option is a Heer owned plant sends only weapons to the Heer etc etc.

I appreciate it’s a very broad subject with, Weapons. Ammunitions and Vehicles maybe being vastly different between forces.

Thanks

The scale of equipment, known as the Establishment of a unit would be a start, ie; if a Division has 10,000 K98s or sixty trucks or 40 105mm guns, for example, then the Quartermaster of the unit would apply for replacements via normal channels as equipment was used up or lost. The German army, like all armies, made constant Quartermasters' Returns to higher office as a matter of normal routine, from every sub-unit, so that a Divisional Commander would have an immediate "snapshot" of what was on hand; if a unit had ten StuGs on Monday 1st, of which six are fit for battle, then was in combat for four days and was reduced to two Stugs and had consumed all of it's fuel and ammunition, then it would immediately requisition replacements, sometimes as quickly as losses occurred, even by radio or courier or landline. If the unit was equipped with a specific weapon, that required unique ammunition, then it would be flagged by the Q system so that it theoretically always got the right shells, ie, a StuG unit would not get Panther shells and vice versa. Sometimes, in the event of a retreat or a chaotic battle, units would simply take whatever they could carry from depots or whatever they could pick up from the battlefield.
