I'd say nothing beats the classic look of the M1A1 Thompson (affectionately known as the "Tommy Gun")... But the M3 Grease gun don't look shabby either (or the similary looking MP-40)

Hard to beat the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan.

25-pr.

Actually, better than that is the RA command and control system.

I like a "cab rank" of rocket armed Typhoons! That, and dry-cell battery powered radios !!!

I agree to a point, but I think that the old style mobster Tommy guns with the drum magazines are the best-looking, especially in the hands of Churchill.

Otherwise, the PPSh41.

Beautiful - of course, no :) Beautiful are MG42 or Thompson :D :D :D
Reliable - probably, yes! But was quite inconvenient for the gunner AFAIK 8)

I still prefer 12.7mm Browning HMG in combat :D
As for the Soviet hand armament - I prefer self-loading rifle SVT! :D

Here is my opinion:

If you are referring to rifles, I would have to say the BAR was the best. It was in a class like the MG-42 in that it was very distinctive and extremely dangerous to infantry and light armor and very terrifying to the enemy. More over it was highly mobile in that it was carried and used like a rifle. The US was very concerned about it falling into German hands because they could reproduce it and the US would have to face it and limited it to the Rangers.

If you are talking about pistols, the 45's issued to officers had quite a pop.

If you are talking about a submachine gun, the Thompson would be the one for me.

If you are talking about light machine guns, the MG-42 would get the nod.

If you are talking about heavy machine guns, I think the "MaDuce" M2 (50 Cal) was the best and is still used today by the US.

If you are medium tanks, the Sherman got it done. It was the best offensive tank in the war. Nothing could move like it could and still put up a decent fight if backed into a corner. For some reason, WWII pundants compare it to the Tigers and Panthers. It was never US tank doctrine to take on German tanks head to head. US doctrine was that heavy tanks were to be destroyed by artillery, infantry bazookas and Fighter/Bombers and then the Shermans were to break through the lines causing mayhem in the enemies lines against soldiers.

If you are talking anti-tank weapons, you have to like the PanzerFaust (Armor Fist). The Americans would pick those us when the German Army had to flee and left them behind. It outclassed the bazooka.

If you are talking heavy battle tanks, the IL 3 (Stalin tank) is Mr Bad, though developed late.

If you are talking flak artillary - the German 88. This weapon was the lion share of downing of Allied aircraft, bombers and fighters.

If you are talking howitzer artillery - 155 Long Tom - 15 mile range, massive power, and very accurate.

If you are talking bombers, the B-29. Long range, heavy ordinance, high altitude, pressurized, and radar guided defense guns.

If you are talking aircraft then the P-47 Thunderbolt would be my pick. I know that is controversial to say that and I also know it was 70 mph slower than the ME262 in straight and level flight, but it could shoot down the ME262 by running it down from higher altitudes, in addition it could simply following it back to it's base have much more flying time. The 262 had too short a range and had to slow down to be effective. The 262 was too fast for unguided weaponry and would fly so fast past its target that it couldn't get ordinance on it and when it slowed down it was vulnerable to bomber's defenses and escort fighters. Like the P-51, it didn't take much to bring down a 262. The T-Bolt could take a massive beating and fly back with several of its jugs shot off and pieces of its wings and tail torn up and still fly for an hour limping back to England. They only practical way to bring it down was to shot the pilot which is hard to do. It also had more fire power than the 262. The P-47 N model could go 467 mph (about 20 mph faster than the P-51D). In addition, the P-47 could strike ground targets with a ton of bomb ordinance and then turn around and shoot down any attacker that came to fight it off. Though one of if not the fastest fighter in the ETO, (with the big paddle props it could outrun the spits and P-51s) it still had 8 "Ma Duces" mounted to its wings and heavy armor behind the pilot for survivability. It was the most veratile aircraft in my opinion. It has the record to match, in destruction of equipment in both ground equipment and air borne equipment.

The statistics that include the fact the P-47 was the first ETO fighter and had green pilots and only 884 lost to flak and dog fights, of which most were survived because of its rugged contstruction. In addition it was the first American fighter that could escort the bombers to Berlin. A bomber that escorted bombers. No other "groups" of aircraft could even near these numbers:

* 545575 operational sorties made by 15683 produced aircraft.
* 7067 aircraft destroyed of which 3572 in the air
* 3499 aircraft lost, amongst which...
* 884 lost in the air for a kill/loss ratio of 4.6/1
* 9000+ locomotives destroyed
* 86000+ rail wagons destroyed
* 6000+ armored vehicles destroyed
* 68000+ motor vehicles destroyed
* 60000 horse-drawn vehicles destroyed

But then again we should have known. Patton didn't kick the crap out of crack Panzer divisions with just Shermans. Monty proved that couldn't be done at Caan.

Tell me any other plane that could be used as a dominant fighter, strike bomber, dive bomber, ground strafing, tank destroyer, without a change in its configuration.

Owen Gun Mk I and II

Reliable (didn´t jam often), light, cheap to make, and most of all, Australian made.

i own 2 garands, a rock-ola carbine, 91/30 mosin nagant, and a tommy gun. out of all of those i think i like the m1 carbine best. the tommy guns ok but awkward to sholder and to heavy for such a weak round and the fall rate of the 45 is sickining, its not worth nothing but impressing people who havent ever shot one.
