I doubt that letters from Eva Braun would have been in the Berghof. The building had been gutted by fire by the time the Americans arrived. Letters from her would have been seized from their recipients. Failing that, most of her surviving personal items were looted from her house in Munich.

Max,
For what it's worth, I have an envelope addressed to Hitler in Berlin that he must have 'taken home' with him because on the back is a notation from an American Major saying that he picked it up at the ruins of the Berghof.
Even though mostly destroyed I would imagine that such things could still be found around the place early on.
But you're right, letters from her would have had to come from the recipients.

Very occasionally rare historical documents do sell for a fraction of what they are really worth:

Earlier this year a genuine hand-written letter from Mary Queen of Scots to the President of the Privy Council was sold on e-bay for a fraction of its worth due to low-key publicity before the auction. Only afterwards did the major museums realise they had missed a golden opportunity to secure a prize exhibit.
US bidder snaps up Mary Queen of Scots letter on eBay

A MUSEUM-quality letter written by Mary Queen of Scots has been lost to the United States after being sold to a collector in an internet auction.

The previously unknown manuscript, penned in "Edinburg" on 15 December, 1557, fetched $3,250 (£1,639) on eBay. The Belgium-based seller had set the starting price at $1,000 (£504).

The letter was sent by the young queen to Viglius de Zuichen, president of the Privy Council, when she was aged 15. Unusually for Mary, who generally wrote in French, the copperplate text is entirely in Latin.

The two-page manuscript bears the queen's personal seal and is signed in her italic hand "Tue virtutis Amica" - your virtuous friend - Mary R.

The document features an unusual watermark depicting a hand reaching for a star.

The anonymous vendor, who lives in the Belgian town of Hoeilaart, described the letter as an "extremely rare document - a museum piece".

The Eva Braun letter, if original, was seriously undervalued. An autographed picture of her to Traudl Junge is on the block now for around $27,000, which is too high. By way of comparison, a tangerine colored dress of hers from the Griffth collection sold last week for nearly $40,000, which is too much. I had an opportunity to buy that same dress for exactly $700, and instead bought another one I thought looked nicer. Prices depend on who shows up at the auction that day, and who's selling the item. Eva Braun signed items should bring anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 realistically, including letters. Dresses should be realistically prices up to $5,000. But I own one of her fur coats, a black sealskin with embroidered roses on the silk lining from the Griffith collection, and it's the only known fur coat with her monogram. Because of its uniqueness, I believe it's worth well over $15,000. I recently had a chance to hold two EB monogrammed Walther PP and Walther PPK pistols in my hand. Because of the rarity, each went very quickly for $35,000 each. Please let me know of any other EB items that come up in hands of private collectors, as it's the best and most economical way to trade!

Eva Braun swimsuit/playsuit two piece khaki

#13

Post by montreal707 » 03 Sep 2007, 22:21

Eva Braun's swimsuit/playsuit in cotton twill khaki with blue flannel lining. Note hook and eye fly and wide flair of leg. Bra size 32-34, corresponding to Eva's measurements. Stain in crotch area suggests use and offers good DNA. Looking for reliable forensics/DNA company to do comparative DNA against perspiration traces from fur coat and/or strands of hair taken from coat and another brush from another collection. Genetree.com does this kind of test for $1,200. Does anyone know if this is a good price, or is there a university or private lab that can do this for a more reasonable fee to share in the results academically?

NOTE: All items are with provenance from prominent collectors. Items are not for sale, but to share with this web community for historical purposes. Anyone is welcome to share these images.

Gretl Braun wearing my fur coat?

#14

Post by montreal707 » 03 Sep 2007, 22:25

This is image posted by another member some time ago. Is that same member out there, and can send me another picture or copy of same with better detail of the coat/jacket Gretl is wearing in this picture, and the date the picture was taken?

Have reason to believe I am now the owner of the black fur coat Gretl is wearing in this pictures.

Would be very grateful for any response/help.
