"The Key" with William Holden
Re: Game: guess from which war/historical movie is the pictu
There you go! We have a winner! I was beginning to think it was too obscure.
"The Key", 1958, William Holden, Trevor Howard, Sophia Loren.
An American fighting with Canadians is given command of a British tug due to past peace time experiences and made captain. The tugs go out and rescue ships that have been torpedoed and or shelled by U-boats. Armed with a malfunctioning WWI AA gun as their only offensive weapon the are used as target practice by a German training U-boat. Sophia Loren, a Swiss refugee, shares an apartment with Trevor Howard, who invites Holden to move in. Loren is seen as bad luck because every man she falls in love with dies shortly afterwards. The title "The Key" comes from the fact that there is one key held Howard who then gives a copy of it to Holden shortly before his demise, with the promise that Holden will find someone worthy and pass a copy of the key to that man when the time comes, and so on down the line. Holden falls in love with Loren and it looks like he's next to die. It's an offbeat war flick that most people haven't seen before, but there are some decent action sequences interspersed into the love story.
