Movies with identifiable units

#1

Post by Marcus » 02 Aug 2009, 19:32

I thought that we in this thread could collect information about WW2 movies (non-documentaries) were identifiable units are included, it can be for example that they are specifically mentioned, that the movies covers a specific action where they played an important part or that it is seen on the markings or insignia.

A few examples to get things started Das Reich in "Saving Private Ryan", LSSAH in "Kelly's Heroes" and the Italian 33. Infantry Division Acqui in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin".

For the 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division “Prinz Eugen”:

The 2003 movie Bulletproof Monk directed by Paul Hunter featured a character named Strucker, an SS-Standartenführer with the Knight’s Cross, who led a Waffen-SS Gebirgsjäger squad on a mission to Tibet. Strucker and at least one soldier wore the “Prinz Eugen” cuff title.

Shawn

Not a movie but a TV series - 'The Anzacs' - early 1980s, starring Paul Hogan, featured the 8th Battalion.

Here’s one for the 17. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division “Götz von Berlichingen”

In fiction
Directed by Mikael Salomon, the third episode of the 2001 TV miniseries Band of Brothers, entitled “Carentan,” features an attack by armor and troops of the Götz von Berlichingen Division.

Although not a movie, here's a bit of fiction for the 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division “Prinz Eugen”:

The novel Mac Wingate #2: Mission Code King’s Pawn by Bryan Swift depicts the namesake of the series and his comrades in a shootout with two soldiers of the Prinz Eugen while on a secret mission in Albania, although the division was not known to have operated there in June 1943.

Another bit of fiction, this time for the 4. SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Division.

Best regards,
Shawn

The novel Mac Wingate #3: Mission Code Minotaur by Bryan Swift depicts the namesake of the series and his raiding party in a firefight with a detachment of the SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Divison on the Greek island of Kos in August 1943.
