I believe you are talking about Battleground, which depicts the battle of Bastogne.

Saddly _its Pure Hollywood:

the Scene of Colonel Hessler reviewing tanks-was based on a real newsreal -however the actual German Officer WAS NOT KILLED but survived the war and was interviewed on a History Channel documentary on WW II!

The scene where Hessler is blown up at the end-there was a roadblock by using burning gas cans on one of the road Colonel Peiper tried to use--however no German tanks were blown up as shown

The Malmedy massacre-did not take place in a forest with a truck mounted machine gun -actually took place in a field at a crossroads {movie version Similar to massacre at end of movie The Great Escape-also by machine gun from truck-}

Hessler is shown as a Army Panzer officer- the main point of the German assaults was by the Waffen SS panzer formations

Any more mistakes?? :welcome:

If you'd call the Panzer Lehr Division, the 2. Panzer-Division and the 116. Panzer-Division - along with several Volksgrenadier-Divisionen - Waffen-SS panzer formations then yes - the main points of the German assaults were indeed what you say they were.

Then why is it an error that the fictitious "Hessler" is shown as an army panzer officer?

It is a movie, and I thought it was alright until the end when the big battle scene is in the desert!! Now when I watch it on TV, I turn off the TV before the "big battle scene. Always remember MOVIEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I tend to not watch war movies anymore, and for that matter I may stop going to World War II museums, or if I do go, I should carry a pad and pencil and record everything that I think is wrong, so I can do a little research, and send the director the corrections as needed.

I dont watch war movies voluntarily. Just twice in the past fifteen years, because my date wanted to. "It has Tom Hanks!".

Carl,

Damn she wanted to watch an actor play a soldier when she was sitting next to a real soldier (ok Marine)!! Unbelievable! :D

In the late 1960's the producers of such films had the choice between using old American equipment or not depict "German" armour at all. I must say that it has become a bit tiresome to see people nitpicking "mistakes" from old war movies when in reality these were not mistakes but simply a matter of "having to go with what's available". Or perhaps you know where the producers of "Battle of the Bulge" could have found a mass of Königstiger tanks and Sd.Kfz. 251?

I couldn't agree more Harro.

The only time 'wrong' eqpt has really bugged me is in that thoroughly dire movie Pearl Harbor - looking at rows of ultra-modern Aegeis class cruisers (or Arleigh Burke DDs? I forget, and I don't really care) getting bombed by squadrons of CGI Zeros, on top of all the other things to hate about that movie, really irked me.

I would take wrong tanks, planes, ships, whatever; over CGI any day of the week...

One of my favorites. I have a collection of the movie in 3 video formats, like VHS, VCD and DVD.
