Yes. Well done von thoma!

After seeing this at the cinema, a group of us (10 year olds) decided to become parachutists. We made parachutes from old bedsheets and rope. We intended to jump from the roof of a disused wartime hanger in the local park. Fortunately the park was patrolled by a Ranger, who caught us and confiscated our gear.

The full movie has been uploaded to Youtube.

You are correct about the movie title!

However, two ships of the Bristol class of destroyers of 1940-1941, the DD-494 U.S.S. Doyle and the DD-627 Thompson actually did the stand in work for the live shots of the DM-18 U.S.S Caine. The Bristol class destroyers were nearly identical to the previous Benson class destroyers of 1937-1939.

The DD-786 U.S.S. Richard B. Anderson did appear in the film in the final scene as the new ship the newly promoted Lt. Keith was assigned to after the courts marshal. Keith conned the ship out of port at the end of the movie.

The Caine of the movie only had three 5-inch gun turrets. The original design of the Bristol class called for four 5-inch turrets, two forward and two aft. The lower rear turret of the Doyle and Thompson appear to have been removed (probably post-war in 1945 with their conversion to fast minesweepers DMS-34 and DMS-38). Both ships were decommissioned in 1955, stricken from the records in 1970 and 1971 and both ships were eventually broken up and scrapped.

The Anderson was a Gearing class destroyer first commissioned after the war on Oct 26, 1945, which was stricken from the U.S. Navy after decommissioning some time later one and then transferred to the Taiwan navy as the Kai Yang. The Kai Yang was decommissioned in 1999.

Originally there were plans to sail an navy destroyer into foul weather to obtain the storm footage, but it was later decided to use a model and the water tanks at the studio to create the scene. A highly detailed model of the U.S.S. Caine was constructed for the scene.

Yes! The tv miniseries from 1982. The drain pipes were used to create the "buzzsaw" defense of the Alaskan pipeline pumping station against the Soviet Spetsnaz unit.

Your turn.
