Gen. Maj. Ing. Leo Levnaic-Iwanski von Iwanina

Post by Stauffenberg II » 05 Dec 2009, 13:47

Dear Sirs,

would anybody happen to have details on the Austrian Gen. Maj. Ing. Leo Levnaic-Iwanski von Iwanina. I would appreciate knowing his DoB and DoD.

I have the following:

Member of the K. u. K. Artilleriestab
Member of the Austrian Generalstab
Generalmajor: 31.01.1933
Head of the Austrian Armament (Staatsfabrik): 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 (on 30.09.1936 replaced by Ernst Hammer)
Head of the Kriegstechnisches Amt (KTA): 1937 (from 01.10.1936 on)

Did his replacement as head of the KTA really become effective prior to the 1938 fusion?

Thanks,
Jürgen

Hi Jürgen,

I do not have a Generalmajor Leo Levnaic-Iwanski in my files, but I do have a Feldmarschalleutnant Alfred LEVNAIC-IWÁNSKI (8 Oct 1880 - 22 Jun 1963), as chief of the KTA. Any ideas which one of us has incorrect information (it seems unlikely that bot Leo and Alfred would have the same command)?

Best wishes,

AJK

In the Schematismus für das kaiserliche und königliche Heer und für die kaiserliche und königliche Kriegsmarine, 1907 there was a Leutenant Leo Levniac attached to the 39 Divisions-Artillerie-Regiment. Same person?

Hi Andris,

the pre war rank list of the Austrian Bundesheer for example the 1936 edition (the personal copy I have at home) is listing GM Leo Levnaic-Iwanski (without the pre 1919 noble addition "von Iwanina"). So I wonder if your dates are referring to Leo or Alfred?

Steen,

I do not know. In the 1918 Schematismus he was already member of the Artilleriestab.

Hi Jürgen,

I will do some more digging into the Rangliste that I have, and let you know what I come up with.

Hi Jürgen,

I looked at the Rangliste that I have in my collection, and it seems that I goofed somewhere. There was a Generalmajor Alfred Levnaic-Iwanski listed in the 1928 Rangliste (who must have later been promoted to FML), but I can find no indication that he headed the KTA. I also looked at the 1936 Rangliste, and there was GM Leo Levnaic-Iwanski listed as head of the KTA. Thank you for raising this question, which has allowed me to correct some errors in my files. Now we both need to find the DOB and DOD of Leo!

Best wishes,

AJK

Hello,

Maybe a late reply, but nevertheless (I have a 31.01.1933 promotion to Generalbaurat, the FML rank according to the headstone):

Feldmarschalleutnant Ing. Leo Levnaić–Ivański von Iwanina
* 14.09.1883 in Wien
† 19.04.1947 ebenda

Generalmajor (31.1.33) Levnaić–Ivański is still shown as the Leiter des Kriegstechnischen Amtes in the 1 April 1937 Schematismus. Generalmajor Ing. Ernst Hammer is shown as the Leiter of the Staatsfabrik in the same edition and in the 1938 Rangliste. FML Levnaić–Ivański is not listed in 1938 so had presumably retired in the intervening period probably with the Titel of a Feldmarschalleutnant. I cannot find an officer specifically assigned to the KTA in the 1938, list although the ranking General of the Kriegstechnischer Stab is shown as FML Dr. Ing. Karl Leitner.

All very confusing isn't it!
I don't know if it helps but I have a letter from Ing. Alfred von Levnaic Iwanski dated 9th October 1940. It is on the letterheading of Steirische Gusstahlwerke A.G. (which was part of the Goering setup) and shows him as a Feldmarschalleutnant a.D. He doesn't provide a title so I don't know in what capacity he was employed by the company. Hope this is useful.

Hello,

I found a biography of Nikolaus Levnaic–Iwanski von Iwanina (* 08.03.1882 Krems an der Donau; † 05.11.1936 Wien) in Österreichisches Biographisches Lexikon 1815–1950 at http://www.biographien.ac.at/oebl/oebl_ ... 2_1936.xml.
