My great grandfather's uniforms

#1

Post by Miklossy » 06 Jul 2014, 15:05

Hi, recently I found these family pictures, they represent my great-grandfather and his father or his brother, I don't know exactly. They lived and died in Transilvania, that was a part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. Their name was Miklossy, a very old hungarian family.

Please help me with any informations you have about the uniforms, ranks, period when these uniforms were used.
Thanks.

Top photo: Looks like the standard 1916 infantry uniform (used 1916-18), rank is Zugsführer (sergeant). The ribbons are difficult to identify, but my best guess is two bravery medals and perhaps a long service ribbon.

Bottom photo: Very interesting--rank is Stabsfeldwebel (roughly a master sergeant assigned to staff), 2nd-highest non-commissioned rank. Despite being an NCO, he is wearing an officer's tunic and cap. Austria-Hungary was chronically short of junior officers, so he may have been functioning as an officer (it was almost impossible to be promoted to an officer from the ranks). His medals are the Silver Bravery Medal 1st Class and the Silver Bravery Medal 2nd Class.

Thank you very much for the informations. Regarding the second photo, can you tell me when it was used that kind of uniform? In the same period with the uniform in the first photo? This information would help me to find out if the two men from the photos were brothers or son and father.

Thanks again.

It is hard to tell from the photo if the uniform is Hechtgrau (used from 1908-1916) or Feldgrau (used from 1915-1918), but both photos look like they were taken during the First World War.

In the first photo he is wearing the rank insignia of a Feldwebel. You can just make out the braiding to indicate this. I can't quite make out the third ribbon, but it is possible it is the Mobilisation Cross 1912-1913. The other two ribbons are for medals awarded on with the 'bravery ribbons'.
In the second photo the rank of a Stabsfeldwebel and appears to be wearing the Silver Bravery Medal 1st Class (large) and the Silver Bravery medal 2nd Class (small).
I agree with Prohaska that both photos are taken sometime between 1914-1918.
