And Glenn:
Working your officers list at
http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/bund38.htm
I asked myself which of them were of nobility. I know Haselmayr received the nobility, Jansa and Wiktorin, although already retired in 1938, too. Furthermore I know Jesser, Krischer and Pauer.
Are there more "von" persons (Generals and General Staff Colonels)?
Regards

Vons
Jürgen,
I have identified the following has having formerly held Austrian nobility:
General der Infanterie Sigismund Schilhawsky (Ritter von Bahnbrück)
Generalmajor Paul (Ritter von) Wittas
Generalmajor Dr. Alfred (Ritter von) Hubicki
Generalmajor Adalbert (von) Schmidt
Oberst Maximilian (de) Angelis
Oberst Wilhelm Neugebauer (von Reigersperg)
Oberst Franz (von) Freudenseher
Oberst Gustav Wayer (Edler von Stromweil)
Oberst Gottfried (von) Barton
Oberst Johann Tarbuk (von Sensenhorst)
Oberst Karl (Ritter von) Kurz
The Luftstreitkräfte were formed under the title "L" on the 1st of May 1934, renamed Luftschutzkommando and then on the 1st of June 1935 as "Kommando der Luftstreitkräfte"
The title chief of the General Staff did not exist before Jansa was appointed to that post in 1936. The De-Facto Chief of Staff before then (including Jansa) was the head of Department 3 in the Defence Ministry. I believe Jansa's predessor was General der Infanterie Artur Schiebel.
Regards
Glenn

Dear AJK, Glenn2438 and Marcus!
I have found a strange thing regarding the last Cdr. of the 1st Division. IMHO it couldn´t be Stümpfl, but Generalmajor Karl Kotik. I have some copies of the 1938 personnel listing of the Bundesheer. But I can´t find Stümpfl. Looks like he retired in 1937 or 1938.
I hope I didn´t overlook him but actually I don´t think.

Re: Commanders of the Österreichischen Bundesheer
Hi learned colleagues,
Nearly 6 years have gone since the last post, but I have discovered an error in the list of Brigade commanders. It turns out that there were 2 Generale Josef Schneider:
Josef Maria Ferdinand Karl SCHNEIDER, Edler von Manns-Au (2 February 1865 in Graz - 3 February 1945 in Graz)
Generalmajor: 31 Oct 1912
Feldmarschalleutnant: 1 Sep 1915
Char. General der Infanterie (dt. WH): 31 Oct 1940
1 Jan 1919: Retired
and
Josef SCHNEIDER (27 May 1877 in Wien - 12 Aug 1938 in Wien)
Leutnant: 1897
Oberleutnant: 1901
Hauptmann i.G.: 1907
Major: 1912
Oberstleutnant: 1915
Oberst: 1917
Generalmajor: 1923
General: 1924
Dec 1917 - 1918: Chef des Generalstabes, Armeegruppe Albanien
1919 - 30 Jun 1923: Sektionschef und Leiter der Abt. 4. im Staatsamt f. Heerwesen
1 Jul 1923 - 22 Dec 1923: C.O. 3. Brigade
22 Dec 1923 - 1 Feb 1924: transferred to the Heeresinpektorat
1 Feb 1924 - 1925: Heeresinspektor der Bundesheer
1925: in reserve
So in fact the Commander of the 3. Brigade (and later Heeresinspektor) was this second Josef Schneider, not Edler von Manns-Au.
Best regards,
VJK
