Original Jan.1915 handwritten FliegerMeldung map

Postby janel90 on 31 Jan 2012 00:44

I have a red/black/white Flieger Meldung, with a tube....and the original hand drawn map that was enclosed in the tube and dropped to LtGen Hofmeier. Here is what I am told is the commentary (translation from German) that accompanies the drawing on the map ---- Inscribed on top: "On 20. [or 28.?] 1.15 at the Bois d’Herties [?] Basis for a destructive bombardment by our batteries". Then, next to the little map that includes the villages of Regnieville, Limey and Mamey this is written..."2 batteries in the second hollow north of Mamey (150 m west of the street) firing on the Priesterwald. We are going up again. If you would like to we could direct your fire on these batteries. The signals remain [the same]"....signed "Baer".

I have already researched and received some information about the pilot/observer Baer (noted below), and am hoping this might lead someone to give me information about my great grandfather, Lt Gen Fritz Hofmeier (his unit, what was this battle, etc). I'm also trying to find out if this original document and Flieger Meldung might have any value to a museum or teaching institution, or an individual collector.

janel90,
I can assure you that a great many Museums, educational centers, historians, Aviation specialist, collectors, and dealers would be "MORE THAN" interested in your artifacts.....and "what you have" is quite unique....not the typical keepsake or souvenir, but with somewhat limited appeal to some collectors. What it's worth without seeing "what we're talking about" is difficult to estimate...

Can't help on the historical details.....but "Everything" related to WW1/WW2 is collectible and has value....how much depends on the item and the interest!
Good luck ....

Thanks, John. I'll grab a quick photo of the banner and the map and see if I can upload it to this forum.

Glad to know someone might be happy to have this. It is a lovely family heirloom, but it's importance is lost on us. I'd be happy to share it with those who could really appreciate it!!

This is what is hanging on the wall in my home. If there is any interest, I can send better photos via normal email. Just let me know.
