Ulanen Unit Postcard?

Postby zetazot on 06 Mar 2012 18:22

Last weekend I was digging through some of my Great Grandmother's effects that my Mother had kept and stumbled on a few things. There was a Iron Cross that had been mailed home during the Great War. Supposedly it came from the German who had killed a great-great-cousin. He was killed around March 28th, 1918. It was recovered and mailed back by his best friend. It's a little chipped and worn, but some of the ribbon is still intact. I can get pictures if anyone is interested.

I also ran into this post card. (We had family on both sides of the World Wars.) If anyone has any info or can help with translating the back, it would be greatly appreciated... My German script skills are nonexistent. If not... enjoy!

I can't help read the Post Card much....it is addressed to a member of 2. Ulhan Regt. 2 from "Brother Markoff" but what it says I don't known (only the obvious "word" here & there".....the picture appears to be "early", just prewar or 1914/15 (IMO)......but can't tell much more.

No harm in posting pictures of your Iron Cross, if you wish ......I wouldn't seriously put too much credience in the story, but certianly a "treasured keepsake" from WW 1....(German Soldiers wouldn't have been "carrying" thier 2nd Cl. medals with them into battle...not usually anyway....)

Thanks for the reply. I would have replied earlier, but my computer's motherboard committed suicide. Knock on wood, the replacement seems to be working. :)

Small world... it just dawned on me that the relative (Otto Krauss) that this is addressed to is buried here in the US in the the city I live in, Syracuse... less than ten miles away. I contacted another relative and her records show that he served from 1906-1909, so you're dead on!

I find the iron cross story a little hokey, but my mother swears that's the story she was told. Its just too neat. Supposedly it was taken the sniper that killed him... I just can for the life of me wrap my head around the idea of retrieving something like that if it was trench warfare and all. Then again... I know very little about the time period so who knows? Its a neat story to go with the iron cross and the pictures of my great-great-great-cousin-or-something.
