Thanks HFK for Luigi Zuccari that guy has bugged me for quite a while, I knew he commanded the VI Corps in 1911-1913 but nothing else after that. As for General Gobbo I am wondering if this is really General Gabba. Do you have anything on a General Gabba?

Bde MT assignments at start of War
1st (Excelles) 2nd (Fenestrelle) 3rd (Alessandria) 4th (Savona) 5th (Piacenzia) 6th (Genova) 7th (Ancona) 8th (Verona) 9th (Bologna) 10th (Venezia) 11th (LaSpezia) 12th (Roma) 13th (Napoli) 14th (Taranto) 15th (Brindisi) 16th (LaMaddalena) 17th (Messena) 18th (ReggioCalabria). Where they went after the war started you may know, I do not. In 1916 a 19th Bde MT and a 20th Bde MT where formed and sent to Albania. Also the MT help form the various fortress commands along the French and Austrian Borders but I do not know the battalion composition of these units or of the brigades themselves.

Further in 1916 MT formed the basis for regiments 201 thru 232 which of course formed new Brigades for the active army at the front. I hope this helps somewhat Martin.

my best
Greg

Greg,

My thanks - the MT info has filled a gap in my research - incidentally do you have a reference for the MT providing the basis for the 201- 232 reggimenti? I've come across it only in the Osprey book on the Italian Army.

Hi Greg,

Some more specific dates for Zuccari: 13 Sep 1847 - 24 Dec 1925
As for Gabba, there was a post-WWI Generale comandante designato d'armata (July 1936) Melchiade GABBA (20 Aug 1874 - 17 Nov 1952), but I very seriously doubt that he was a General already in WWI. Further information about him can be found at:

http://notes9.senato.it/Web/senregno.NS ... enDocument
and at

Additional infos about general Zuccari:

LieutGen (Army) Luigi Zuccari never commanded 3rd Army in war, he was removed from the command by general Cadorna a few days before the 24th of may (1915) and replaced by The Duke of Aosta, cousin of the king. The duke had a car accident reaching his new command, and was temporarily (until the 28th of may) replaced by LieutGen Vincenzo Garioni, commander of the VII Army Corps. It left the 3rd army without a real commander in the first days of the war, leading to the letargic advance on this part of the front (the outskirts of the austrian Carso lines, a few km from the frontier, were reached only in june)

For the Brigades commander, but also for the regimental and battalion ones, there is a series of books edited by the Army Headquarter in the twenties, called simply "Brigate di Fanteria". It's similar to the "Grandi Unità" series, about armies, corps and divisions.

After a couple of years, I have finally tracked down some info on General Gobbo:

Tenente Generale Gaetano GOBBO (20 Dec 1840 - ?)
1900 - ?: Commander, Alessandria Division
1903 - 1909 Commanding General, V. (Verona) Army Corps

I guess patience IS a virtue!

Best wishes,

hello i just came across this forum on the italian war, battle of caporetto.
I recently came across a photo of my paternal grandfather and im eager to know where i can obtain his military records. I know from the picture there are some clues, such as a number 93 on his hat, he also has two 5 pointed stars on his collar. i was told that those meant he was a liutenant of some sort. Is there any way i can find out more details on my grandfather?

from my small research i could find out that he was part of the 93rd infantry regiment of the messina brigade. I know he was born in 1896 in the town of castel di lucio which is in the province of messina,

any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you and i will try to upload a picture.

sincerely mike regina,

thank you for the help thus far, the colors are indeed another discovery for me at least and all of his decendants. we knew nothing about him and we are slowly but surely discovering more and more every day. My main goal is to have the Military Records of my grandfathers, paternal and maternal. I have found a link online from family search which i believe is some kind of military record of some sort, after opening the link it has a lot of records and it would take me a long time to find the records im after, if you want the link let me know ill be happy to post it here, any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you and have a great day.
