French woman searchs traces of his american grandfather

#1

Post by Mary Murphy » 24 Feb 2009, 21:48

Hi,
I live near Lyon in France . I look for the traces of my grandfather. His name is William Murphy. He lived in Detroit, Irish origin . He worked in auto mechanic. He was in France (Limoges) in October 1918 during First world War. He knew my grandmother. My father was born of this union in July 1919. Unfortunately I don't know his date of birth. And I don't know his regiment.
I promised at my father to find cousins ( second or third cousins) before his death . But he died and I could not find traces of my grandfather.
Please help me, because I am very sad.
Thank you very much for your answers.
Cordially.
Mary Murphy.

Mary,

You definitely need to find out first what American units were stationed in Limoges in October 1918. There's probably an historical society in Limoges that can help you.

You can also try to a French forum on WW1:

Hi Emmanuel,
Thank you very much for your answer.
I tried pages 14-18. mes discussions, one year ago, but I found nothing.
I try to contact an historical society in Limoges . It is Perhaps a good idea.
I lost my mother and some months after, my father. And I have not ascendant parent. It is why I am sad. I try learn for four years english but it is difficult for me. I would like to go in USA with my daughter. So she can know the country her grand grandfather. For five years ,I tried to find cousins or traces of my grandfather but without success.
I would like to correspond with american people to learn better American and can go to USA within two or three years with my daughter.
Do you know american people who will like to correspond with us ?
That is very kind of you to read me.
Cordially.

Marie,

There is the American Club of Lyon that connects American expatriates in the region. I'm sure you'll find interesting contacts there. Here is the link:

Bonne chance,
