Poelcappelle 9 Oct 17
Re: Poelcappelle 9 Oct 17
Thanks for replying, I can use information if it is related to a source but I've only got the German OH for 1915 (translated recently by a couple of Canadians).
* {{cite book |ref={{harvid|Edmonds|1932}}
|title=Military Operations France and Belgium, 1916 Vol I: Sir Douglas Haig's Command to the 1st July : Battle of the Somme |last=Edmonds, | first=J. |authorlink= |year=1932 |publisher=Macmillan |location=London |edition=IWM & Battery Press 1993 |isbn=0-89839-185-7}}
{{sfn|Edmonds|1932|p=}}
This is the sort of material I need for a reference to fit Wiki criteria. Data (particulary numerical data) would be really helpful as the (English language) sources I have are sparse for the Germans and nearly non-existent for the French.

German sources are sparse too, most got destroyed during WWII.
Also, the German wiki pages usually don't get as detailed on WWI as the English articles do and the operations are in one article instead of giving each part of a battle an individual review. :-/

Re: Poelcappelle 9 Oct 17
I don't suppose you could list the casualty records in Der Weltkrieg for the various Somme battles?

I´m not sure, if the question about the tank support is almost reponsed.
The following british tank units took part in the battle:
oct., 4th: A bataillon, 1st company ; D bataillon, 10th company
oct., 9th: D bataillon, 11th company

The are also a few pages in the Reichsarchiv "Der Weltkrieg 1914-1918" vol. 13, but only in german language.
About the casualties I have the following informations:
The german 4th army from 21.july - 31.dec.: 217.000 men (35.000 k.i.a.; 48.000 m.i.a.)
The allies from 31.july - 31.dec.: 332.000 men (324.000 british - 50.000 k.i.a.; 38.000 m.i.a.) The french 1.army had lost 8.000 men.
The battles are divided in different fights:
from sept., 26th: Battle near Zonnebeke and the Polygon wood
from oct., 4th: Battle of Poelkapelle-Gheluvelt
from oct., 9th: Battle between Draaibank and Gheluvelt
from oct., 12th: Battle of Paschendaele

Knocked this one off while procrastinating over the Delville Wood page.

Did this one too, although the detail on the attack at Oppy Wood is sparse.

Still procrastinating so I added footnotes to Michael https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Michael

Still procrastinating but I've found out how to upload maps and photos from ex-copyright books and have been adding them. I've also managed to "read" sections of the German OH via a translation programme, dictionary and a Fraktur crib-sheet, which has been interesting and have found some material in English on French and Belgian operations at Ypres 1917, to go with maps etc of the Merckem peninsula, Houthoulst Forest and Drie Grachten.

Finished transposing the left to right narrative from the source so put it in for a B-class review then spent all afternoon, machine translating Der Weltkrieg XII, to try to glean details about the German defence. I can just about manage to read Fraktur with my crib sheet but it's awfully laborious.

Re: Poelcappelle 9 Oct 17
B-class, it has some serious deficiencies though, the German side of events is sparse and air operations negligible. I'm being conservative with the detail I add from the GOH since the reliability of the/my translation is doubtful, except for figures and OOB which are hard to misinterpret. It doesn't help that the GOH treated the battles on the Aisne and Champagne as a whole, so one minute I'm reading about Eingreif divsions on the Suippes and the next I'm near Soissons. I'm quite enjoying it though.
