7.7cm IG gun

#1

Post by CharlieC » 27 Mar 2014, 02:19

Towards the end of the war Krupp modified 7.7cm FK 96 n.A field guns as Infanteriegeschutze (Infantry Guns).
Although there seem to have been a fair number of these guns built I've been unable to find images of the IG
or whether there are any surviving IGs.

Anyone help? - it's for an article on FK 96 derivatives for the Landships II (landships.info) website.

So far I've found the following derivatives:
7.7cm Nahrkampfkanone
7.7cm KiH (Kanone im Haubitzelafette)
7.7cm IG
QF Mk.1 77mm (British conversion of captured FK 96s to pedestal guns for merchant ships)

Regards,

Charlie

Hello,

It is a photograph of the two 7,7 cm FK.96 n/A field gun and Infantriegeschütz.
The "Infanteriegeschütz" is very to heavy in spite of small wheels and lightening of some parts. Some 51 batteries were armed with this model.
This photograph is taken about 1925 in the former "Ecole d'Artillerie" of Fontainebleau, in which they were near all typs of german and french guns of First World War in immaculate state!
The Museum was entirely pillaged in 1940 because most older Artillery german officers remembered the phrase of Ludendorff "L'Artillerie française, je la haïs!" (The french Artillery, I hate it!).

The two models of 7,7 cm FK.96 n/A.
Yours sincerely,
Guy François.

Thanks.

According to someone who has seen an IG L/27 in a private collection the gun is a very modified FK 96. The axle is narrower and shifted rearwards about 30cm. The gun shield has quick release clamps so it can be removed easily. The barrel can also be removed without the usual process of taking the recoil assembly apart. The spade is narrower and differently shaped - there's also provision for a counterweight just in front of the spade.

Charlie
