"Purging" of Foreign Colonel-in-chiefs of Enemy Nations

The Declarations of War during 1914 also found the Armies of the Warying nation with a delicate dilemma. Before the War many foreign members of Royal Houses hade been made Colonel-in-Chief of various Regiments now belonging to Enemy Nations. This neccessitated a "purge" of these connections.

Looking first at the Russian Empire.

Kexholm Lifeguards Regiment of the Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary Franz Joseph I. The connection with the Emperor and King was terminated 26 June 1914.

The German Emperor Friedrich III's St Petersburg Life Guards Regiment. The name of the German Emperor was removed on 26 June 1914. As St Petersburg was deemed to German the name of the Regiment (and of the city itself) was on 24 august 1914 changed to Petrograd Life Guards Regiment.

10th Novgorod Dragoon Regiment of HM the King of Württemberg. The King's Col.-in-Ch. was removed 1 august 1914.
14th Malorossia Dragoon Regiment of the German and Prussian Crownprince. The Crownprinces' Col-in-Chief was removed on 1 august 1914.
9th Bug Uhlan Regiment of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. His Col-in-chief come to an end upon his murder, but I have no further information as when his name was removed from the Regimental title.

Saint Petersburg was not the only city to change names. In Canada, Berlin was renamed Kitchener - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_to_ ... ame_change.

In the British Army the following Regiments had enemy Colonels-in-Chief. The date of their removal in not known to me.

1st (King's) Dragoon Guards had the HIM Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary as Col-in-Ch. He was also a KG (Knight of the Garter).

1st (Royal) Dragoons had as its Col-in-Ch. HM Wilhelm II German Emperor and King of Prussia. He was also a KG.

11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussar had as its Col-in-Ch. HIRH The Crownprince of the German Reich and of Prussia. As his father a KG.

The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's) had as its Col-in-Ch. HRH the Duke of Albany.KG a.k.a Karl-Eduard reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Lost his title of Duke of Albany 28 March 1919. All of them having lost their KG:s on 13 May 1915.

A special case was H.H. Adolphus Duke of Teck which was a Major in the 1st Life Guards and HSH Prince Alexander of Teck which was a Major in the 2nd Life Guards. The Duke and Prince was brother of the British Queen Mary and like the Royal House in 1917 renounced all German titles taking the name Cambridge, thus ending the Teck line. The Duke beeing created Marquess Cambridge and Prince Alexander Earl of Athlone. They served in various military possisions during WW I, both raising to General Rank. The Earl of Athlone served as Governor-General of South Africa 1924-1930 and of Canada 1940-1946.
