Help with WW1 Uniform Please

#1

Post by Taikouchi » 14 Oct 2014, 07:15

I make a ton of insignia and jackets for the 10th Heer 33rd Atillery Battalion I am with. I've recently been asked to camo a M16 German WW1 helmet, place the soldats name inside, and provide a tunic with correct piping for the branch. I got some of the information I need but I just want to run it through before I do it so I don't make myself look foolish! The fellow I am doing the work for says he wants this for a private of the 5th assault battalion rohr circa mid 1917. First question I've completed the camo but I do not know what rank to put in front of his name Infanterist, Jäger, Schütze, Gardist, Grenadier, Fusilier, Musketier, Pionier, etc. Second question is the tunic. I believe that this unit used pioneer style tunics. For circa mid 1917 should it be 1907, 1907/10, or 1915 tunics? And is the shoulder boards black with red? I appreciate any help, these WW1 things confuse me, glad I stay with WW2 mostly!

I've done a bit more research. I believe the rank for private would either be Pioneer or Sturmmann. I have not been able to find any death cards or pictures. So correct me if I am wrong but I am leaning towards "Pioneer/Sturmmann (Name of Soldier) Pr. Sturmbatl. 5" What do you guys think?

Pionier seems to be the preferred appellation based on the unit's honor roll:

You can get the regimental history of Sturmbatallion Rohr for something like 5 bucks from this guy:
http://www.military-books.de.vu

It contains a couple of decent photos of Pioniere I cannot reproduce here due to copyright issues.

We only believe the rank for private will either be pioneer, do not know what others think!
