3rd Ypres October casualties question

#1

I'm trying to find the source of a claim that British casualties at Ypres in October 1917 demonstrate that a defensive attitude in the salient did not reduce casualties (it was the third worst month of the war for BEF losses), bearing in mind that the total number of battalions for all the attacks after 4 October was fewer than for the Battle of Pilckem Ridge on 31 July. I added the point to the Wiki 1st Passchendaele page but neglected to cite it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
